One of the things you hear when you are abisexual activist, is that people think the word ‘bisexual’ implies there isonly two genders, or that we are not attracted to trans people, or that wesupport the gender binary. Does the fact that bisexual starts with prefix “bi”means that’s true? And do we need to abandon the word? No. Let me explain.

作为一名双性恋权益活动家，我会听到这样的问题：双性恋这个词会不会让大众认为我们在支持性别二元化？因为“双性”貌似在暗示着我们只认同男女两性，或者在否定我们会被跨性别者所吸引。“双”这个数词是不是为这种想法背书？如果真是这样，我们还应该以“双性恋”自称吗？ 对这些问题，答案只有一个：不。让我来告诉你这其中的原因。

Have you heard this? “Bisexual meansattracted to only cisgendered man and cisgendered woman?” Or “someone saying that theconcept of bisexuality is somehow trans phobic?” Leave me a comment, and let’stalk about that.

Some people do seem obsessed with the ideathat bisexual is a bad word. They don’t want to meet their reactings tosocietal bi phobia, which calls us greedy, insecure, and needing to pick aside. They are better than that, so they come up with intellectual soundingreasons, about why the word itself is a bad word.

双性恋这个词似乎一直被某些人污名化。但是，这些持有偏见的人并不想被冠上“恐双”的帽子，他们不会直接把“双性恋”跟贪婪、缺乏安全感、朝三暮四画上等号。这些人机智地用高大上的语言学忽悠别人，说“双性恋”本身就不是什么好词。

They say that bi means two, and two meansrigidly either one or another. Yes okay, about 25 years ago when I became abisexual activist, one common definition of bisexuality I heard was attractedto both man and woman. But even then it wasn’t both man and woman, unlessthat’s trans man and woman. How do you define what you are attracted to isup to you. But over two decades, be forefront of bisexual community, I’ve neverheard any one bisexual person say that bisexuality itself excludes attractionto trans people. I’ve spoken to thousands of bisexuals, and not a single one.

这些人会说，双性恋”不是有个“双”字嘛，“双”不就是“二”嘛，“二”可不就是二选一的意思嘛！对这种说法，我只有“呵呵”了。25年前，我刚刚成为一名双性恋权益活动家时，大众普遍对双性恋的定义是“同样会被男女两性所吸引的人”。但即使是当时，这个定义也没有强调“同样被男女两性（但不包括跨性别男女）所吸引的人”。自己究竟会被什么样的人所吸引，完全是因人而异的。在一线为双性恋社群服务的20年期间，我接触了成千上万名双性恋者，却从未听其中任何一位说，双性恋本身就意味着自己绝对不会被跨性别者所吸引。

Since the late 90s, the definition ofbisexual index now promotes has get wider usages, “attraction to more than onegender”. Not your own gender, and least one other, because some people don’tfind their own gender attractive, just more than one. Even when people hearthis definition, they query it: “surely that’s pansexual.” No. As I just said,it’s okay not to be attracted to some genders, such as your own.

从90年代后期至今，由双性恋索引（The Bisexual Index）所改良的双性恋定义被广为接受，即“被一种以上的性别所吸引”。这“一种以上的性别”不一定指你自己的性别，只是其他另一种性别，因为有些人不觉得和自己同性别的人有吸引力。总之，只要会被多于一种性别所吸引，就是双性恋。但又有些人开始质疑：“这就是泛性恋啊。”才不是嘞！就像我刚刚说过的，双性恋者是可以不被某些性别所吸引的，比如与自己相同性别的人。

But still, they hang up about the prefix.Flammable and inflammable mean the same thing, so maybe prefixes aren’t set in stone.Languagechanges: not all gay people are carefree, not all lesbians are Greek. Not allgeeks are circus performers who bite chickens, although, some probably still are.That would explain why help-desk line is always engaged. And when they say, “but it’sa number prefix, that’s very specific, it can’t mean one number inthe past and different number now. Words don’t change meaning like that.” I justtell them, “Bisexual visibility day is September 23rd,” and wait tosee if they object. September literally means 7th month, and it’sthe 9th month. Words change, usages evolve.

这样解释已经够清楚明白了吧，但是还是有人对双性恋的“双”揪着不放。拜托，“客气”和“不客气”都能演化成同一种意思，那‘双’的含义也可以是与时俱进的啊。语言的含义是不断演化的：现在说到gay这个词时，绝大多数不是取其无忧无虑的含义；谈到lesian，多数也不是指生活在希腊Lesbos岛上的姑娘们（1）。再比如极客（Geek），谁还记得这个词原指马戏团里表演生吃鸡头的人？当然，可能有些极客的确是这样的，或许这就是为什么技术支持热线总是忙音吧。还有人说，“‘双’可是个非常具体的数字。从古至今‘双’都是‘二’的意思啊，数字是不会改变意思的。”我想对这些人说：“双性恋日是September 23哦。”然后等着看他们是否反驳。September曾经的意思是七月，但是现在变成了九月（2）。词语是在不断发展变化的，语义亦然。

There is great many resources out there forbisexual people, a community, lifelines. If we tell people they shouldn’t usethe word, we are cutting them off from these things. We are bisexual, we cansay it, we can tell you what it means, it’s what we are.

现在，有许多资源为双性恋者提供支持。我们有自己的社群和极为重要的救助热线。如果我们告诉人们不应该使用双性恋这个词，就等于将他们隔绝在双性恋能够享受的资源之外。我们是双性恋，我们要大声说出这个词，我们可以告诉你这个词真正的含义，因为我们就是双性恋！

That’s it today. This one is short becauseit really is that simple, bisexual means attracted to more than one gender, notattracted to cis-man andcis-woman only. Maybe insisting the bisexual means there is only twogenders makes much senses than saying bilingual means only two languages.

今天就到这里吧，我要说的事情非常简单：双性恋即是被多于一种性别所吸引，且不仅限于被顺性别男女所吸引。坚持“双性”就是性别二元论的人，想必会认为“双语”意即世界上只有两种语言吧。

注：

（1）“lesbian/蕾丝边”一词源自公元前六世纪女诗人萨福(Sappho)的故乡——古希腊莱斯博斯岛(Lesbos)的名字。据推测，萨福曾在岛上指导、熏陶一群年轻女子。萨福留下的作品中多描写女子的美貌，并明表她对女性的爱意。从19世纪开始，lesbian一词便开始被用于指代女同性恋。

（2）在古代罗马月历中，全年仅十个月，September指第七个月份。公元前153年左右，罗马月历第一个月March之前加上了两个月份，所有月份名称不变，但指代的数字均加2。如今March指三月，September则指九月。
