The ophthalmologist discovered Flavia’s lazy eye when she was 2 years old and because her father has strabismus, we were very concerned. Flavia was examined at the Kellogg Eye Center at The University of Michigan, USA, because I was working there at that time. The diagnosis was an alternating exotropia, and they recommended surgery. The surgeon did not give a good prognosis for Flavia to recover her vision, so we decided not to have surgery at that time.

弗莱维两岁时,眼科医生发现她患有弱视,因为她父亲有斜视,我们对此非常担心。当时我正好在密歇根大学工作,弗莱维就在大学的眼科中心做了检查。诊断结果是交替性外斜。医生建议手术,由于手术预后不是很理想,所以当时我们决定,暂时不做手术。

When we returned to Spain, we visited a pediatric ophthalmologist. We asked her if the strabismus could be affecting Flavia’s performance at school, and the answer was, “absolutely not.” Our daughter had learning problems, so we started to think that she has some kind of neurological problem. We took her to a psychologist who told us that our daughter had Asperger syndrome. We did not like the way the testing and diagnosis was done, so we looked for a second opinion. Our daughter worked with a psychologist for one year and a half after being diagnosed with ADD. The results of the treatment were disappointing because it did not resolve either her vision or learning problems.

回到西班牙后,我们咨询了一位儿童眼科医生,问她斜视会不会影响孩子学习。医生回答说,“当然不会”。但孩子确实存在学习问题,于是我们就想,弗莱维是不是有大脑神经方面的问题。我们带她去看心理医生,心理医生告诉我们,孩子患有阿斯伯格综合症。我们不喜欢这种检查和诊断方式,所以,接着去看了其他医生。诊断结果是多动症,孩子在心理医生那里治疗了一年半,结果很失望,既没有解决视觉问题,也没有解决学习问题。

We then went to a neurologist who told us that Flavia didn’t have ADD, so we keep looking for help. Finally, we found Gonzalo Garcia, an optometrist. One of the most interesting things for me was that the treatment, optometric vision therapy, was a neurological treatment. The therapy was a learning process through the visual system, teaching the brain to see in 3D.

I asked the ophthalmologist if after the surgery my daughter would see in 3D. She couldn’t answer. In fact, when l asked if my daughter’s eyes could refuse the change produced by the surgery and return to the original position, she answered, “Yes, it is possible that this can happen.”

我问眼科医生,斜视手术后,孩子能不能看出立体效果。医生却回答不了。事实上,当我问眼科医生,“做完手术后,孩子眼睛会不会拒绝这种术源性改变,回到原来斜视的位置”。她回答到:“可能会这样。”

When I asked a representative from the Social Security system, they told me that it was impossible that our daughter would recover her stereopsis and 3D vision! After seeing what an optometrist has done for my daughter, it is incredible to me that ophthalmology doesn’t recognize optometric vision therapy as valid. After one year of vision therapy treatment, our daughter has solved all of her visual problems. She now has stereopsis and sees in 3D! She has solved all of her learning problems in school and her self-esteem has greatly improved. I am so impressed with the results that I am now thinking of starting a program of vision therapy for myself!

我问过社会保障系统的一位代表,他们说,我女儿不可能恢复立体视!在看到眼视光医生给弗莱维的治疗后,我对眼科医生否认视觉训练的有效性,感到不可思议。视觉训练一年后,女儿所有的视觉问题全部消失,她现在能看出立体效果!所有的学习问题也都解决,自信心有极大提高。治疗结果好的让我震惊,我自己都想去进行视觉训练了。

Before beginning my vision therapy, I saw double very frequently. I never see double anymore. I also have improved in many different aspects of my life that l had no idea were related with my eyes! I am much less tired and have much better attention.

在开始视觉训练前,我看东西经常重影,训练后,看东西再也没重影。训练也解决了生活中的很多其它问题,之前我没意识到,这些问题和眼睛有关。我感觉眼睛轻松很多,注意力也变好了。

Flavia is a 10 year old girl who had total occlusion when she was one year old without any positive result. Her eyes began to turn out when she was 9 years old. She had learning problems at school, social relations problems with other children, and she felt frustrated very easily. The psychologist reported normal intellectual capacity.

弗莱维现在10岁,从一岁开始全天遮盖,没有效果。9岁开始外斜,学习困难,与同伴社交困难,经常感到沮丧。心理医生认为,弗莱维心智正常。

Flavia had an alternating exotropia and a hyper deviation (eye turns out and up). Her visual problem affected not only her cosmetic appearance, but her entire visual system and her academic performance at school. She was unable to learn through her visual system as her primary learning system. Simply put, her visual abilities were just not good enough to support learning.

弗莱维患有交替性外斜和上斜,不仅影响外观,还影响整个视觉系统,以及在校学习表现。她的视觉系统功能太差,无法支撑弗莱维完成学习任务。

During my evaluation, I found significant problems in her developmental motor, eye coordination, and visual information processing systems that were all related with the strabismus and learning problems in school. So, I treated Flavia’s motor and visual problems as an integrated system, working with the important interconnections between the body, brain, and eyes.

检查发现,弗莱维在身体运动发育、双眼协同、视觉信息处理方面存在严重问题,这些都与斜视以及学习问题相关。所以,我把弗莱维的身体运动问题和视觉问题,作为整体治疗,从身体、大脑、眼睛之间的相互关系着手。

The final results of the vision therapy program is that Flavia has completely resolved her strabismus. Her eye only occasionally turns out and up, except in very specific situations. Her performance at school is greatly improved, and her self-esteem is significantly better.

视觉训练后,弗莱维斜视痊愈。只有在特殊情况下,才会偶尔外斜和上斜。学习成绩明显提高,自信心也有极大增强。
