I think a lot of people would say China is the emerging superpower.

Francisco Barbosa, raised in Rio
I live in Rio de Janeiro and some years from now a lot of chinese is coming to live in my neighbourhood, in the north zone of the town. They are hard working and not very open to other people. For some reason, some of these chinese usually open and work on small savory snacks stores, called pastelarias
They are nice, and some are joyful just like brazilians. One day I saw a teen in these snacks stores in our Port hood playing/making fool of a brazilian just like any other girl of her age.
When I'm coming home from work, sometimes a I see a chinese young woman bring her son from primary school. In another time, I've seen the same boy on his father's shoulders. The father was singing a brazilian song for kids but in chinese. I've seen a chinese man making a ramp for wheelchair in his snack store by himself (maybe the Town said to him that his store needed a ramp). Instead of paying someone to do it, he made it by himself, to spare some change. I think the chinese people think the brazilians are lazy ou thinks themselves really smart.
But also I've seen a chinese teen with his headphone on listening to loud music on the metro. He seemed upset for some reason. I don't think he get along here. Maybe he stays to much time online.
One of these days I saw a family of chinese people waiting for the train. They were all grown ups, but there was a chinese little girl that they all took care. The were all very patient.
There's a Chinese Cultural Association in my neighbourhood, but I've never been there. It's also a restaurant. It's always full at the weekends:

Most of Brazilian people (at least most that I know) think that China is a great country, with great technology. People here, usually tend to relate chinese people with hard-working and smart people. We have also the vision that chinese citizens demading a lot of themselves. About the language, we think very dificult, and if a brazilian citizen say that he is learning chinese, people would say that he is crazy!

Luiz Felipe, Brazilian, we don't talk about 1950 and 2014.
Carlos Fujita has given you a well explained reply, I would add some aspects of Jose Geraldo Gouvea's answer too. However, one thing that they forgot to mention is that a lot of Chinese people with commerce here work with food, mostly selling Pastel and juices, they are hard workers, we can see that once I went for a coffee at 7am at one of those, let's say, cafe and later, around 8pm I went there for a snack after class. The same person was there all day long, everyday, with no exception. We often make fun of the "China", but with no intention of mocking. I just think that Chinese people here have a close mind, they don't try to be friends with our people, it's almost like they are afraid that are culture can overcome theirs.

Rafael Miranda, lives in Brazil
I lived with a Chinese roommate and had lots of Chinese friends while studying abroad in the US.
It was a big culture shock at first. Being half a world apart, Brazil and China have a different way of doing almost everything.
The first few weeks were awkward. We didn't really know what to say to each other or had anything in common. But as the weeks went by, we started bonding precisely over how different our lives had been, and how the other’s perspective was interesting.
My favorite experience was going to a restaurant in Chinatown where all the menus were in mandarin and there was not a single non-Asian person. Our chinese friends took me and my friends and we ate each of their hometown’s traditional dish. They were totally different from any Chinese food I’d ever eaten, and delicious.
We talked about childhood, parent’s expectations, cultural pressures, and after 9 months of living together I found that even if we’re half a world apart, our lives were not that different after all.
Another interesting episode was the time I came back from the shower with only the towel wrapped around me and my roommate happened to be skyping his girlfriend and her friend.
The girls were blushing and giggling, he called me up to talk to them. I apologized for being half naked on camera and the friend said I looked like a rockstar hahahaha. That was a nice stroke to the ego!
I really liked most people I met from China, and I’m looking forward to visiting it soon!

Well, even though I'm actually responsible for only my own impressions on the theme, from what I've seen here in Brazil, the feeling is that Brazilians tend to be quite neutral regarding non-Western countries, except Japan, whose influence here is well-documented. China has only become an issue as it turned out to be a more prominent global player, which is a recent phenomenon. Chinese coming-of-age success have been appreciated around here, as it represents the economic heyday of the developing countries, beating the US as the leader country regarding trade and investment. At the same time, Brazilians are a little concerned about their own deteriorating economy, as cheaper goods from China have flown into the country. Just imagine the Carnaval costumes almost all made in China. From what I can perceive, Brazil welcomes Chinese influence as long as it doesn't get on the way of a Brazilian distant dream which is to secure its own role as a global player too. These views could deteriorate or not, depending on what happens. Regarding the people, Brazilians are quite tolerant about almost anyone, take it by the the last World Cup huge success. We love Chinese food, too.

Everybody hears a lot of how China is walking at large steps to become world's next superpower. Chinese people are seen as hardworking and serious, and like in any Western country, their culture is seen as exotic and object of curiosity.
Many Brazilian big cities have large Chinese (also Taiwanese) immigrant communities. There comes the bad part: The recurrent stereotype of the young Chinese couple with at least 4 children, running a small pastry shop or a restaurant, in any corner of a major city's downtown. Many people avoid eating at them because they assume Chinese have bad hygiene habits, eat dogs, pidgeons, and even rats (which I think, is the worst misassumption ever about them).
Jose Geraldo Gouvea, Been here for 42 years
This is what I have heard people say about the Chinese (some of these things I myself have said, but I won't tell you which)
1.They are legion...
2.Everyone east of India and north of Australia is Chinese somehow
3.Kung-Fu! Shao-Lin! Shangri-La!
4.Statuettes of fat, smiling, big-eared Buddhas seated in the lotus position.
5.They are very hardworking people (which the Brazilians admire a lot)
6.They are very concerned about family and homeland (which the Brazilians also admire a lot)
7.Sometimes they seem to have some kind of a hive mind (which the Brazilians find very scary)
8.Chinese language is the new Greek (alien-looking and damn difficult to learn)
9.Confucius.
10.The Chinese eat a lot of animals whose very sight makes Brazilians puke: caterpillars, roaches, bats, spiders, crickets...
11.They apparently eat dogs, which the Brazilians find detestable (actually dogs are not eaten in China, afaik, but please see #2)
12.They once built a useless wall to keep enemies away, but it actually failed to protect them.
13.Their economy is growing at an impressive rate for years. The phrase "Chinese growth rate" ("taxas de crescimento chinesas") has entered economics lingo in Brazil.
14.They have had many wise people and produced innumerable "chinese proverbs" which are quite witty.
15.They're gonna take over the world (some hope for it, some are afraid of it).
16.And everybody will have to learn Chinese just like now people have to learn English.

Carlos Fujita, Born in So Paulo, lived there my whole life.
Stereotypical impressions about China, shared by most people I know, include the following:
  • There are lots of Chinese there. Like, more than one billion. We do not really know how one billion people look like but it must be a hell lot of people.
  • Because of the huge population, there is a very strict one-child-only policy.
  • They suck at football. But they are really good at stuff like table tennis and maybe gymnastics.
  • They are extremely determined and disciplined. This translates in the most beautiful opening and closing acts of Olympic Games. But they lack social skills.
  • They all look the same. And they also look the same as Japanese and Korean people (I am of Japanese descent, so I hear this all the time).
  • They manufacture most of the stuff we use. Like kitchen stuff, clothes, electronic devices. We find it funny, but are not totally surprised, when we buy souvenir from a Brazilian city we visited on vacations and it is also made in China.
  • They eat bugs.
