What are some stereotypes of specific Chinese cities?

There are so many multi-million cities in China that I suppose all are very unique in their own way. I want to get more feeling of what the cities are like, so let's discuss what the city or the people in the city are known for :)

nikatnight:Beijing: loud, tall people, love to argue.

Shanghai: expensive to date women, the best husbands because they do everything, holier than thou.

marmakoide:

Beijing - pretentious, hipster, bureaucratic

Shanghai - pretentious, cosmopolitan, Western

Hangzhou - beautiful, impossible to get a taxi (this is true)

Suzhou - beautiful, 'Venice of the East'

mwzzhang:According to my dad (not from Shanghai), Shanghairen perceives everyone who is not from Shanghai to be a bunch of nongs.

Ade_In_China:Shanghai people do have a very bad rep amongst people from other provinces, who, in my experience, believe them to be arrogant wankers. The same can also be said for Beijingren as well.

saaaaaad_panda:I can't speak so much for the other cities, but I've lived in Shanghai for a couple of years, and can agree with the others about it, Shanghai is pretentious, expensive for china, and just full of people who think they want to be better than you. As well as this, it gets more Westernised every year it seems, loosing much of what makes it seem 'Chinese' in the process

kisses_joy:Chongqing -- where all the beauties are from

bradj43:Chengdu: laid back, relaxed.

Chongqing is known for beautiful women, Nanjing people are loud with particularly funny dialect, Hong Kongers all have a particular kind of hardened sarcastic attitude and also "brash & fast-paced" like New York...

buddy-bubble:I think Dalian is also known for beautiful girls right?

kanada_kid:Shanghai is modern snobby cify, everyone drinks in Qingdao, everyone from Guangzhou is open, Chongqing people like spicy food

zerton:Does anyone know anything about Guangzhou? I'm asking because I love the architecture of the city and when looking at the buildings there the skyline looks classic, unpretentious - almost conservative. Reminds me of Chicago. Is this in any way accurate?

BillyBattsShinebox:Dunno about about Guangzhou, but Wuhan is known as the Chicago of China. I think because it's a similar size, located relatively centrally, is a major transportation hub, and the people there have a reputation of being quick to anger (does Chicago have this reputation? I can't remember). There might be some other reasons too.

Speaking of "the X of China", Changchun is known as the Detroit of China, but that's just because of the auto industry.

Dorigoon:Changchun is also a shithole like Detroit, though the natives are pretty great.

ethanle:Shenzhen is like Bay Area in US. So many Hi-Tech Companies.

mister_klik:I've heard from multiple sources in and out of the city that Harbin has the craziest taxi drivers.

hellotherehomogay:Zhengzhou - China's Atlanta. Metro(ish) city with modern architecture and amenities placed in the middle of one of the shittiest regions in China and filled with said region's hillbillies.

cuginhamer:From my observation, the people in Ruili and Mangshi (beautiful cities in extreme SW China, Yunnan province) have a style that reminds me of Chiangmai, Thailand.

Tiffany:Suzhou has beautiful gardens, nice canals, nice artworks (especially Suzhou embroidery), nice local langauge (I love the sound of Suzhou language), and nice people.

Alfred W Croucher:Hangzhou, Suzhou and Shanghai can provide the contrast between modern and traditional. Nearby water towns such as Tongli, Zhouxhuang, Wuzhen reflect old towns built on canals but are mostly modern reconstructs.

BillyBattsShinebox:Wenzhou - good businessmen ,they call people here "the Jews of China", not meant in a derogatory way, incomprehensible language

lacraquott:And a diaspora all over the world. You go to Rome's Chinatown, Paris's, Amsterdam, etc. they're all from Wenzhou.

owlinprime:Not a specific city but people from Guangdong Province are sometimes associated with the stereotype that they eat EVERYTHING.Guangdong husband asked me, as I was picking snails from my garden, if we could eat them. "No!!!" I said. "Then what good are they?" He asked, disappointed.

boundinshanghai:Prince Philip said it best.

jp599:I wasn't sure what he said, so I looked it up:

"If it has four legs and it is not a chair, if it has got two wings and it flies but is not an aeroplane and if it swims and it is not a submarine, the Cantonese will eat it." Said to a World Wildlife Fund meeting in 1986.
