Introduction of intangible cultural heritage

Chiseling is a kind of paper-cutting art without scissors. It is mainly originated from the Tahu Township in Luxi County, Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture. It is also known as Tahu Flower Chiseling. It is still popular in the Xiangxi area and is deeply loved by people.

The appearance of chiseling has an inseparable relationship with Miao embroidery. In the history, there are embroidered flowers first, and then chiseling flowers. Chiseling provides embroidery mold for embroidering. Miao women usually cut out the conceived pattern and paste them on the surface of the cloth, and then embroider following the mold.

In the past, Miao women used to cut their own embroidery molds. Later, when the embroidery molds were separated from the embroidery process, a special paper-cut artist appeared gradually, which was called “flowerer”. After the continuous exploration of the “flowers” of the past generations, the Tahu flower chiseling is well-known for its artistic features such as delicate cutting, smooth lines, various patterns and unique styles. In 1995, it was selected as a national intangible cultural heritage.
