I tend to disagree with the assertion that the extinction of wildlife is an irreversible trend, and I would therefore vote to take steps to save the endangered species.
Indeed, it might make sense to the Darwinians that only the strongest species should survive the existence of competition; those who are not adapt themselves to the changing environment deserve the fate of extinction: the disappearance of dinosaurs is a prime case in this point. Nevertheless, it is simple-minded to attribute the problem solely to the law of nature - what is ignored by them is the role of human activities behind the issue. For example, it is the relentless poaching that leads to the dramatic reduction of many endangered animals. One compelling example is the dying out of the southern China tiger in last century due to the excessive hunting. Also, another factor we cannot afford to ignore is the exhaust fumes from vehicles, which is the main culprit of global warming – a potential threat to animals inhabiting the arctic pole.
While the vanishing of wildlife is inextricably associated with human beings, we should not be reluctant to take steps to deter the problem for several reasons. The primary consideration lays emphasis on the moral perspective: we do not have the right to deprive the life of other species just to meet our greed and vanity. As well as the ethical concern, another factor we should afford to ignore is that the protection of wild animals is crucial to the survival of ourselves. The disappearance of any particular species will jeopardize the ecological balance which might impact the agriculture. For example, the extinction of owls or snakes means that there will be no natural enemy for field mice, which will lead to the destruction of crops.
In conclusion, it looks to me that the extinction of endangered animals is not the result of simply natural process. Rather, it is a problem to which I see human behaviors as a main answer, and therefore we have every reason to reverse the trend.
