通过剑桥词典的释义，我们可以看出：

Rat和Mouse最直观的区别在于体型大小，rat是大型老鼠，mouse是小型老鼠，常见的“家鼠”就是mouse，我们熟悉的米老鼠是(Mickey Mouse)《猫和老鼠》里面的Jerry都是mouse，也就是说：rat是一种体型更大的 mouse。

归纳一下，mouse 和 rat大致 有这四种区别：

mouse大家都很熟悉了，Micky Mouse从小看到大的卡通人物。

真的mouse是指这样的老鼠，耳朵大大的，眼睛也大大的，和Micky还有点像呢。（注：mouse是单数，mice是复数）

而rat的耳朵更小，眼睛也更小。mouse是吃素的，rat还挺喜欢吃肉呢。

1. mouse 体型小（身长12-20cm）；rat体型大（身长40+cm）

2. mouse 尾巴有毛（hairy）；rat 尾巴有鳞（scaly）

3. mouse的嘴是尖的（triangular）；rat 的嘴相对更平（blunt）

4. mouse 每天产生的老鼠屎（droppings）是 rat 的两倍。

说了这么多，“鼠年”到底用 mouse 还是 rat？

虽然说rat貌似带着更多的贬义，但是鼠年更常说的还是 the year of the Rat，不过也有人说成是the year of the Mouse。

但是对于咱们中国人而言，如果非得在小耗子和大耗子里选一个，那么更大、更肥、更富态的“大耗子”（rat）恐怕更适合当中国鼠年的吉祥物吧！
