五帝钱有大五帝钱与小五帝钱之分,大五帝钱指的是 秦半两、 汉五铢、唐朝的 开元通宝、宋朝的 宋元通宝和明朝的 永乐通宝,现在说的五帝钱一般是指小五帝钱,是顺治通宝、康熙通宝、雍正通宝、乾隆通宝和嘉庆通宝。
