Are all real life spies as tough and well-trained in combat as in the movies, like James Bond, Jason Bourne, etc.?

There was an incident involving two Mossad agents that demonstrates how “well-trained” real-life spies are.

In September 1997, the Israeli Intelligence Service’s special operations department sent a small team of assassins into neighboring Jordan to kill the political leader of the Hamas, Khaled Mashaal.

The Israeli agents, posing as Canadian tourists, approached their Palestinian victim in front of the Hamas offices in Aman and sprayed a small dose of a lethal poison into his left ear. Without an antidote, Khaled Mashaal would die by asphyxiation in 48 hours. So far, the Mossad operation was a success.

Unfortunately for the Israelis, however, one of Mashaal’s bodyguards decided to go after the attackers. He first followed them on foot and when they entered a car and drove away, he was able to get a lift by a friendly Jordanian and continue his pursuit.

Unaware that they were followed, the two Mossad agents left their escape vehicle and continued on foot. When they saw Khaled’s bodyguard catching up to them, they tried to run away from him but without success.

They were running over an open field in the middle of Aman when the bodyguard caught them. A fight ensued. None of the three men was armed with a gun or even a knife and so it was all about hand-to-hand combat skills.

It turned out that neither the Hamas bodyguard nor the Israeli agents were very skilled in martial arts. The fight continued and although it was two guys against one, the Israelis weren’t getting the upper hand.

People on the street were getting curious about what was going on there in the field and the fight attracted more and more spectators. Everyone was watching but nobody intervened.

One of the Israelis was finally able to pick up a big stone and just when he was about to smack it over the Palestinian bodyguard‘s head, a Palestinian in the crowd heard his countryman’s shouts (“These are two Mossad agents, can anyone help me?”). Together, the two were able to overwhelm the Israeli agents. They put them in a car and drove them straight to the next police station.

The embarrassment for the Israelis couldn’t have been bigger. They had no other choice but to send a helicopter to Jordan with an Army doctor and the antidote for the poison on board.

To get their two agents back, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to a prisoner swap: 1,000 Palestinian prisoners were to be released from Israeli prisons and exchanged for the two Israeli spies. The first Palestinian prisoner who was released was also the most famous: It was the (in)famous leader of Hamas, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin.

The way these Israeli agents acted was certainly less awesome than what we see in spy movies. However, most Intelligence agencies have other priorities in their agents’ training programs than hand-to-hand combat.

Stealth and anti-surveillance tactics are more important than “toughness” or martial arts skills. If your adversary can’t see you and you’re able to avoid their attention, there won’t be any need for you to fight it out with them.
