我们都知道car是车的意思，但是你知道车牌号的英文却不是 car number 吗？而且车牌号里没有car？！

车上挂的牌照 = license plate

车牌号 = license plate number

☝为什么是license？

这个词有“执照、证书、许可证”的意思。常见的搭配有：

business license 营业执照

driver license 驾驶执照

在这里插播一个小知识点：在学习license的时候，大家肯定见识过它的朋友licence。大家能分辨出他们两个单词吗？

在英式英语中，licence通常被用作名词，而license则被用作动词。

例句：

Do you have a licence?

你有执照吗？

I need to license this vehicle（交通工具）.

我要给这辆车上牌。

在美式英语中，只有一个license存在。它既可以是名词，也可以当作动词。

例句：

I am unable to give you a license because of your history.

因为你的前科，我不能给你驾照。

This restaurant is licensed to sell alcohol.

这家餐馆获准出售酒类。

✌plate 不只是盘子

plate一般指的是“盘子、碟子”的意思。但它同时也能表示“金属挂牌、金属板”的意思。

所以车牌可以翻译为：license plate。车牌号为license platenumber。

例句：

It s illegal to cover you license plate number when you are driving.

开车时覆盖掉车牌号是违法的。

但是plate不止是个盘子！

当想描述“工作多的不得了”的时候，有一个惯用成语，叫做have enough/a lot/too much on your plate，意思是“问题（或工作等）成堆”。

例句：

I’ve got a lot on my plate - especially with two new projects starting thisweek.

我有很多工作要做，特别是这个星期我又开始了两个新项目计划。

有on就有off，off one's plate意思为“不再是某人的责任或工作”。

☝那么car number是什么？

Car number是车厢编号的意思，比如地铁火车的车厢都刻着Car No.，那就是该节车厢的编号。

✌摇号=中乐透？

在大城市比如北京，需要参与摇号才有机会获得车牌。但是摇号可不能说成 shake number，因为摇号和中奖一样，全靠运气。所以：

车牌摇号= license plate lottery

例句：

The license plate lottery was broadcast live online Wednesday.

星期三现场直播了牌照摇号的全程。

☝限号≠limited

在北京这样人口密度大的城市，为了交通顺畅和改善空气质量，对市民的车辆采用了限号政策。

但是车牌被限号千万不能说成：

My license plate number is limited.

这是“我的车牌数字是有限的。”的意思，外国人听后可能会一头雾水。

“限号”的“限”应使用restrict：限制行动

例句:

I can’t use my car because my license plate number is restricted today.

我的车今天被限号，不能用。
