英语中有很多固定搭配是通过并列连词 and 或 or 形成的，它们用于连接两个语法功能一样的成分，其中包含 and 的固定搭配通常是用来加强语气的，有“强强联合”的感觉，而包含 or 的通常是提供选择，有“犹豫不决”的味道。

常见的用 and 或 or 连接到固定搭配有 neck and neck，up and down，now or never，more or less，give or take 等等，今天讨论的的 up and down，它不仅只有表面意思“起伏或上下波动”，它的意思主要有以下几个：

一、意为“起伏，上下波动”，也就是它的简单明了的字面意思“一上一下”，相当于一个副词，例如：

The dog was running up and down the path.

那条狗在小路上跑来跑去。

Tiny boats bobbed up and down in the harbour.

小船在港湾中颠簸。

He jigged up and down excitement.

他激动得又蹦又跳。

二、意为“来回，往复”，表示先朝一个方向，然后朝相反的方向，此时不一定是“一上一下”的物理重复，可以是任何相反反向的来回，相当于一个副词，例如：

She was pacing up and down her desk.

她在办公桌前踱来踱去。

Soldiers were marching up and down outside the government buildings.

士兵在政府大楼外面来回练习队列行进。

有时延申为某物或某个地方的全部，意为“上上下下，全部，整个”等，后面接名词，相当于一个介词，例如：

The recession brought people up and down the country into severe financial constraints.

经济衰退使全国人民陷入严重的财政困难。

I searched up and down the street, but I find my keys anywhere.

我搜索了整条街，但到处都找不到我的钥匙。

's a lot of rushing up and down the gangways.

舷梯上许多人上上下下。

三、意为“时好时坏，不稳定”等，相当于 sometimes good and sometimes bad，相当于形容词，例如：

She's been up and down since her husband went into hospital.

自从她丈夫住院以来，她的情绪一直时好时坏。

My dad's been up and down he lost his job at the factory.

自从我爸爸在工厂失业后，他的情绪一直很不稳定。

My relationship with him was very up and down.

我和他的关系很不稳定。

需要注意的是，up and down 是固定搭配，我们不能写成 up or down，除非这里的 or 是跟 either 搭配，但此时的 up or down 不是一个整体，例如：

The cat has been running either up or down.

这只猫不是爬上就是爬下。
