  • China's assault on Big Tech's “walled gardens” has seen more results;

  • The central bank will delay normal monetary policy for as far as possible.

Here’s what you need to know about China in the past 24 hours

  • China's months-long regulatory campaign targeting the tech sector is starting to see effects, as Alibaba has started allowing users to purchase items on some of its apps via WeChat Pay, the payments service run by its rival Tencent.

    Users of Alibaba’s food delivery app Ele.me, video service Youku, and luxury goods app Kaola can now use WeChat Pay, with more apps awaiting approval to connect. Moreover, bargain retailer Pingduoduo and delivery giant Meituan also accept major payment channels developed by their rivals.

    For years, large Chinese internet companies have used various means to block their users from sharing links to posts and products on other companies' platforms, known as "walled gardens”, to protect their own digital ecosystems, stymie rivals' growth and prevent users from spending cash elsewhere.

    Now regulators vow to “reboot” the industry, tearing down the walls to promote connectivity among different internet platforms, a move to protect users' rights and market competition.

    In July, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) announced a six-month campaign to regulate the internet sector, including a crackdown on internet firms' malicious practices that disrupted market order.

    MIIT stepped up a notch as it ordered tech giants to stop blocking each other's website links earlier this month, which must be unblocked within a timeline. Tencent then made the first move and began to allow users of WeChat to access external links for the first time in years.

    But it may shake Big Tech’s long-valued growth models. Industry experts said Tencent and WeChat - sitting on the largest pool of user data - will be most affected, while Alibaba and ByteDance are more willing to push it through. After all, it is a matter of redistributing traffic, the most valuable asset in the era of data.
