2021年9月28日,由京领主办、上海市民办中芯学校线上承办的全球院士论坛暨青少年科研论坛圆满落幕。
1位诺奖得主、5位来自哈佛大学、牛津大学、剑桥大学的院士,就科研素养提升、创新人才培养话题,为与会的青少年带来了一场精彩绝伦的科研盛宴,并与全国在线观众一同见证了“中国国际学校科研强校”、“中国国际学校科研实验校”、青少年最佳论文奖项等获奖名单的公布。
在全球院士论坛暨青少年科研论坛上,上海市民办中芯学校英文部资深校长Kelley Ridings博士受邀作为学校代表,与6位包括诺贝尔奖得主与来自哈佛大学、剑桥大学、牛津大学在内的院士同台进行了开幕致辞。

学校介绍
上海市民办中芯学校是中芯国际集成电路制造有限公司2001年9月投资兴办的一所十五年一贯制的民办学校。学校校园占地120亩(约8万平方米),其中绿地和花园近50亩。学校最初的办学是为中芯国际公司的中外员工子女提供优质教育,所以注册学生仅限于公司员工的子女。2004年,学校向非中芯公司员工子女敞开大门,将优质的教育资源向社会大众开放,受到了社会各界的热烈欢迎和积极评价。
学校坚持两翼齐飞,中文部和英文部两部同步发展提升,在中文部、英文部及课程融合中心三部老师的共同努力下,走优质、特色、多样的办学之路。其中,英文部与家庭和社区相结合,为外籍学生提供积极的、以学生为中心的教育。在融合中外教育的同时,以美式课程为主,平衡学术卓越与身体、社会和情感健康,培养学生成为尊重自己和他人的全球公民以及身心健康的自主学习者。

Ridings博士有30年教育工作者的经历,曾在美国、墨西哥、韩国和中国担任督学、校长、主任和老师。这是他在上海市民办中芯学校的第10年。
Ridings博士取得教育管理学博士学位,历史学硕士学位,以及中学教育学士学位。

大家好,我是Kelley Ridings, 上海市民办中芯学校资深校长。今天很荣幸在京领的全球院士论坛上为我们学校的创新、才能和发展做演讲。
Hello everyone. I am Kelley Ridings, International Superintendent at Shanghai SMIC Private School. It’s an honor to join you here today at the Global Academician Forum to speak about Innovation, Talent, and Development at our school.
在中芯学校,我们认识到,教育的根本目的是让我们的学生在21世纪成为积极、有爱心的全球公民。当学生完成初中学业时,我们希望他们对“我是谁”有一个很好的理解。当他们进入高中时,他们会问的最基本的问题是:“我将来会是谁?”
At Shanghai SMIC Private School, we recognize that the fundamental purpose of education is to prepare our students to be active, caring global citizens in the 21st century. As students leave our middle school, we want them to have a good understanding of “Who am I?” As they enter high school, the fundamental question they will ask is “Who will I be in my future?”

We want our K-12 curriculum to motivate our learners with the essence of this concept starting in elementary and continuing through high school. Our students have the opportunities to excel far beyond the classroom in so many academic areas – the sciences, math, technology, and the humanities such as languages and history. Our SMIC high school students gain exceptional Advanced Placement program experience through 23 rigorous AP courses taught directly in on campus classes by SMIC-International teachers. The results speak for themselves. Fully 71% of SMIC-International high school students take AP courses, taking 450 AP exams annually. 59% of these exams receive the maximum score of 5, while 95% of them receive passing scores of 3 or higher. The AP program culminates in the AP Capstone with two courses – AP Seminar and AP Research. Through these classes, high school students learn about original research methodologies. They design their own studies and present their findings at year’s end. SMIC students’ innovative research is simply incredible. One student studied the impact of food delivery packaging waste and how its rapid increase has affected Shanghai’s trash collection and our environment. One SMIC-I senior researched the economic impact of real estate development on the Shanghai economy. Another student researched the levels of safety that customers felt when using taxi APPs with his using complex statistical analyses to support his intriguing conclusions.

At SMIC-I students receive exceptional training through our science program which is supported through our rigorous student-centered curriculum that emphasizes skills applications to solve real world problems. Our K-12 aligned curriculum, and the school facilities support students’ excellence in the sciences. With our six newly redesigned middle high school science labs (2 each for biology, physics, and chemistry), students use cutting edge facilities as they exercise their passions in science. This is a commonly shared K-12 school-wide experience. Students in elementary shine through our annual Engineering Design Convention. The excitement about science continues with our annual MHS Science Fair which is an all day celebration of the sciences from middle to high school. MHS students compete in several national and international science competitions. By high school, students can design their own science experiments such as one AP student who researched the effects of music on brain function and how it impacts mood.

Technology is taught to all SMIC-I students starting with kindergarten computer classes and continuing through high school. Our students access a curriculum aligned through each grade level that combines the international technology standards that culminates in the MHS with state of the art facilities. The Artificial Intelligence (AI) lab, a Design Technology Lab, 3 computer labs, and a state-of-the-art media center with a broadcast room. High School students have 17 technology classes including their choices of Video Production, Artificial Intelligence, Broadcast Journalism, and AP Computer Science. Students take their passion for high tech to new levels by pursuing their studies independently. One student, who is an alumni, held a patent while still in high school for a device he invented that charges phones while away from a traditional power source. Another student designed an app for our students to sell their used text books at school. Even though he has graduated, he passed along the tech know-how to other students, and now they have evolved the app to include sales of other student-owned school-related items as well as books. It’s not unusual to find SMIC students who designed their own computers in middle school. And then routinely these SMIC graduates matriculate to study computer science at the world’s top universities such as University of California at Berkeley.

SMIC-I students learn from elementary through high school about teamwork and problem solving. Whether in working on student groups in academic classes, being part of our 9 MHS sports teams, or being part of competitive teams such as our internationally award winning United States Academic Decathlon (USAD), or World Scholars Cup (WSC), or National History Day teams. Students create and present their work through annual school-wide events such as the MHS Humanities Symposium, MHS Foreign Language Film Festival where they screen their own student-produced movies, or the above-mentioned science events. Our high school students have 47 student clubs in which to participate. Many are related to science (such as the Environmental Club, National Science Honor Society), math (Math Club), humanities (Broadcast Journalism Club), or community service such as the Community Service Club, or Cookies for Kenya Club. For example two-whole school charitable projects raise over 600,000 RMB annually. Our Art for Charity Program supports kids in need throughout China. The Million Tree Planting Project has resulted in SMIC-I students raising enough money over the last several to plant 1000s of trees for reforestation in Inner Mongolia over the last several years. All clubs hold one unique feature in common. They are all fully student run. Students create the club, and while they have a staff sponsor, students are expected to run the club. This is meant to be a real-life laboratory where they create goals, design projects, and create real-world out that is oftentimes phenomenal. Two SMIC-I students who were highly active and innovative in their work in the Entrepreneurs Club, and upon their graduation designed their own inventions, including the popular Eggie – an innovative high concept night light.
