John Young started making knives in 1995. He is known throughout the custom knife world for his impeccable fit and finish and for using premier handle materials. Mentored by Steve Johnson (who is a world class maker who at one time worked as a Partner of Bob Loveless) Young’s work is influenced by the classic Bob Loveless design. Besides making an assortment of classic Loveless and Johnson shapes, John has produced a number of interesting designs of his own with many more to come.

It was obvious to me, the first time I met John Young, that he was serious about becoming a great knifemaker. He was a lot younger then, very respectful and would pay close attention to anything we talked about regarding knives. John already had some equipment and had made some knives on his own.When he visited me with a question, we would take a few minutes in the shop and show him some specific procedure, be it grinding or fitting, soldering, assembly and finishing. It wouldn’t take long to demonstrate how I did it and then he would go home and practice and return soon with his rendition of what we had discussed and worked on. Many, many purveyors and collectors have this same opinion of John and his work. John is one of the best at fashioning the Loveless – style knife. He has visited Bob in his shop and obtained Bobs thoughts & beliefs first-hand on what a knife should be and has studied his knives to the point that they clearly represent Bob’s style and designs very well. And John did not stop at this point, he is always interested in, and very capable of, making many different types and kinds of knives. He makes folding knives, having been schooled by many of the top folder makers in the USA.
