Review of speech content
Good morning, teachers, school leaders, colleagues and educators. My name is Jia Lili, associated head of school from Keystone Academy of Beijing. It's my great pleasure to share some of my thoughts at this forum. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank both KingLead and Desheng Education Group for organizing and hosting the Eleventh Innovative Talent Forum. And also congratulate Desheng Education Group on its twentieth anniversary.
My topic today is fostering and developing Innovative mindset. To force and develop innovative mindset, first, we might want to define innovative mindset. We all have different perspectives on what is innovative mindset. It is a mindset driven by willingness to create. Constantly inquiry, explore and come up with new findings, new solutions. It is a mindset open to changes and wanting to make a difference.
But why are mindset matters? Because mindset is an attitude, is a way of thinking. The way we think drives our behavior and determine how we act and how we react. What does it mean to have an innovative mindset? There are many key elements of the innovative mindset. Let's take a few. First, creative curiosity. Second, analytical curiosity. Third, inclusivity. Fourth, collaboration. Fifth, commitment to innovation.
I'd like to highlight curiosity. Why curiosity matters to children? We all know curiosity is a nature of children, and curiosity is a spark that leads to innovation. Curious people ask questions, explore possibilities, curiosity and creativity go together hand in hand. Innovative minds are comfortable, wandering and wondering out of the lines. Why fostering and developing students and learners innovative mindset? Ask you why we want to do that?Because we want to create the mindset, the culture, and the relationships to empower the learners. To increase the learners' engagement and to accelerate achievement.
Today, we're here to share ideas. And also, we are here to share strategies on how we as teachers, as educators, to ensure all our learner experience a meaningful and wonderful journey. To me, it is only a starting point. It is an opening of a discussion. And embracing of ideas that we are all learners, each of us, walking this path together. I want us to take a couple of minutes to reflect on innovation. Does innovation have to involve technology? If you want, you can talk to someone sit next to you. Does innovation have to involve technology? Since when it seems that it can't be even called innovation without computer technology?Since when students in the classroom were more often faced with computers, smartphones and various applications, rather than teachers?Since when has technology take center stage in the classroom?
I have no doubt that some of you will be with me. Think and believe that in the classroom, learning should always take the center stage. But often various electronic tools or software take the lead. A deep learning becomes a victim of technology. If that is true to me, it's not developing innovative mindset. What's the role of technology in learning? Probably, we can take a look at the idea from Triple E framework. It was developed in 2011 by Professor Liz Kolb.
And it's a framework for educators to measure, How well technology tool integrated into lessons? Are helping students to engage in, enhance and extend the learning goals. That is to say, learning first, technology second. Technologies support us to engage in learning goals, enhance learning goals, extend learning goals, not to replace the learning. Earlier, we talk about the importance of curiosity in fostering children and learners' innovative mindset. We said curiosity is a spark that leads to innovation. Curious people ask questions, explore possibilities. Inquiry mindset is about empowering our learners with the tools, understanding and skills to make a difference in this world. In the other word, developing innovative mindset, we have to develop an inquiry mindset. How can we, as teachers, educators ignite children's curiosity through developing quality inquiry questions?Teachers ignite children's curiosity through our day to day teaching and learning. They often choose focus for the unit we all do.We all have been teachers before, then we produce and develop questions.
But, what is the secret? The secret lies in the fact of whether the questions we developed are closed questions or open-ended questions. Whether the questions we designed and developed are quality inquiring questions. So, to design and develop questions thoughtfully is very important. Think about which questions will lead learners towards deep learning and critical thinking. Think about which questions will lead to exciting and engaging learning. In order to foster and developing children's and learners' inquiry mindset, that is required and expected a teacher, an educator with inquiring mindset. Let's take another couple of minutes to reflect on ourselves. Are we an educator, a teacher with inquiry mindset?
So from today, let's all work together to create a classroom and a school of inquiry and make it to be a school culture. Establish the culture of inquiry. From today, in doing so, we can work together to create a culture of innovative learning. Developing inquiry mindset and developing innovative mindset, what does that mean to each of us, to (an) educator? It means Pedagogy is the driver, technology is an accelerator, and passion is the gas. At last, but not least, I want us to look back, reflect present and strike forward. Why looking back?Think back to our schooling. What was it like? What did we spend most of our time doing? What was memorable? What was challenging? What did we find most useful? Then, standing our present. What are we doing right now? What skills do we use on a day to day basis? What aspects of our education prepared us most for what we are doing? Was there anything that we wish we had spent more time learning when we were in school that would have prepared us better?
Then we can look for the future and strike forward. Imagine our kids and our learners, students in their workplace. What kind of work do we foresee them having? What kind of skill sets are they going to need? What do we think schools should be doing to prepare our children to be ready for their future?
Remember, passion is the gas, pedagogy is a driver, and technology is an accelerator. Thank you.
