My best friend Larry is exceptionally small. Although his body is small, Larry is big at heart. When some smart mouth calls him Dopey, Sleepy or Bashful, Larry just laughs. Larry loves sports, especially baseball. I remember when he first came to try out for our Little League team. The coach took one look and shook his head.

“No, I'm sorry, but we need big, strong players, not a batboy!” Larry just grinned and said, “Give me a chance to try out. If you still think I’m a weak player, I'll be the best batboy you have ever had!” The coach looked at him with respect, handed him a bat, and said, “Okay, it’s a deal.”

We had a winning season, and yesterday was our final game. We were tied with the Comets for the championship. As their pitcher(投手)Matt passed our bench on the way to the pitcher’s mound, he shouted at Larry, “Why don't you go back to Snow White where you belong?” I heard him and jumped up, ready to give Matt a punch(拳击), when Larry stepped between us. “Cut it out!” he yelled, pushing me away from Matt. “I can fight for myself.”

Thanks to Larry, we beat them and became the champion. We took turns putting Larry on our shoulders and marching around the field. When we passed Matt, Larry said, “Put me down for a minute, ” He walked over to Matt with his hand wide open again for the handshake Matt had refused earlier. “It was a good game,” Larry said, “and you came closer to win it…”

Matt looked at Larry for what seemed like a long time, but finally Matt took Larry’s hand and shook it. “You may be a shrimp,” he said, “but you're no chicken. You deserved to win.” I was proud to have Larry as a friend. Like I said, he's really big at heart.

Imagine a 900﹣meter﹣high rock wall standing in front of you. You start to climb it. You put your hands and feet in small holes and cracks in the rock. You bear pain and fear until you reach the top. What's worse, you don't even have a rope to keep you safe. If you slip and fall, you will die.

Who would do such a dangerous thing, playing with one's own life? This is, in fact, the true story of 33﹣year﹣old climber Alex Honnold.

Honnold made history in 2017 when he climbed one of the world's most famous cliffs(悬崖) —El Capitan in California, US. Honnold climbed it without any safety equipment(装备). His experience was made into a documentary called Free Solo. The film won Best Documentary Feature(最佳纪录片)at the 91st Academy Awards, also known as the Oscar, last month.

The film not only showed Honnold's amazing climbing skills, but also explained why he chose to climb the cliff and how he dealt with his fear. These are two essential questions for anyone who chooses to try extreme sports.

According to Honnold, for some people. "the point of life is happiness", but for him,"it's all about performance". He said that climbing is the time when he feels most alive.

But he didn't play with his life. He climbed only when he felt ready. He exercised every day. He practiced climbing rock walls while using ropes as much as he could. He wrote down every move he made after practicing.

And this is one of the appeals of climbing, according to Honnold—it's certainly dangerous, but you can still try to make it feel safe.
