Peter Rogerson

1. KingLead: What is the original intention of establishing the school? Could you please introduce the history of the school?
Peter Rogerson, Foreign principal of Haileybury Tianjin:In 2002 Haileybury Melbourne first delivered the Australian VCE curriculum to one school in China and by 2012 had expanded delivery to 6 partner schools in China, and in 2022 now eight schools, plus schools in Timor Leste, the Philippines and in Vietnam. All of these programs are with existing schools, so when the opportunity came along here in Tianjin for Haileybury to run their own campus, they keenly accepted it.
The Tinjin Campus school opened in Sept 2013 with a modest number of students in Years 7 & 10, then over the next two years filled in extra classes, with the first graduates in 2016. The capacity is about 1100 students, so we will soon be full, but we have graduated 100 or more graduates for the last 4 years, so already nearly 500 graduates in six graduating classes.
Haileybury Melbourne celebrates its 130th Anniversary this year, so is one of Australia’s oldest schools and with 4 campuses in Melbourne and their newest campus in Darwin, is Australia’s largest school. Haileybury Melbourne wants to be known as a “great world school”, and whilst this is for others to judge, they recognized decades ago that they should take education to the world, and be operating on the world stage. And the Australian VCE is an excellent curriculum to deliver since it is government backed through the VCAA, so well recognized around the world’s universities.
2. KingLead: Could you introduce us about the core culture of your school?
Peter Rogerson, Foreign principal of Haileybury Tianjin:The core culture of the school is academic excellence – but schools can focus on a number of things at the same time, without compromising the quest for academic excellence. So as well as excellence, we build qualities in our students such as integrity, respect, diversity, critical thinking, perseverance and collaboration.
Our staff are also recruited for their caring attitude – the best teachers have the passion for teaching and are skilled in what I call “the art of teaching”. With such professionals, it is how we deliver on our staff motto that “every student matters every day”- highlighting that the best for each student must be the focus each day.
3. KingLead: In your mind, what is the proudest aspect of the school at present?
Peter Rogerson, Foreign principal of Haileybury Tianjin:A hard question, but if I have to pick only one, it would be our graduates. We have wonderful facilities and staff here, but it is our graduates that give me the most pride, since they represent a job well done. Our international graduates consistently have had more than half admitted to universities ranked in the top 100 in the world, and the next 40% are accepted into top 2-3% ranked world universities, and more and more opportunities are opening up for other overseas destinations – USA, UK, Singapore, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan; there are so many options for graduates of Haileybury. Our Gao Kao school has matured too and many excellent graduate pathways into China’s Tier 1, and Tier 2 universities were achieved. So I am MOST proud of our graduates, and I am confident in their character training and academic success once they have left our school。
4. KingLead: What do you think is the most competitive part of your school compared with other schools?
Peter Rogerson, Foreign principal of Haileybury Tianjin:There are many things – we have great facilities and laboratories to support our teaching, and small class sizes to ensure that each student gets the attention they deserve. Our Junior School is compulsory Chinese Curriculum, but has an extensive English curriculum program and comprehensive extra-curriculum and activity program.
Our senior school also features small class sizes, but also is a laptop school, where each student brings their own laptop to learn how to manage this modern tool in an education setting, before they enter university.
But above the physical characteristics, it is caring for the students that make up the school community. At our school we have a very strong welfare structure to care for the students, with their homeroom teachers, Heads of Welfare, House system in senior school, and two school psychologists to counsel groups of students, individual students, and if necessary, their family.
And for those that are boarding students, we also have the Life Teachers caring for them in the boarding house – it is wonderful to see how they work with the youngest students teaching life skills to encourage independence and self reliance. The comprehensive welfare and pastoral program is yet another way that we prove that “every student matters every day”.
5. What do you think is the greatest feature of the school curriculum?
Peter Rogerson, Foreign principal of Haileybury Tianjin:At International Senior School, it is that we offer the Australian VCE Curriculum, which allows students to focus on their interests and strengths:
Based on a core of English and Chinese language, and at least one math, the students can then select from a variety of subjects that interest them and could be the basis of their future university studies. For example Physics, Chemistry and extra Math for the student interested in the sciences, Accounting and Business Management for students interested in Commerce studies; or Studio Art, or Japanese for students with strength in those areas – but they can also mix their choices over faculties and create about 60 unique courses.
Further, the final study score is a mix of school-based assessment and written assessment. The traditional written exams still exist and are responsible for at least 50% of each grade, but written exams can’t always demonstrate the students’ full range of skills. So the school is entrusted to assess features like public speaking in English, Chinese and language; or designing and conducting practical experiments in the sciences, or creating folio work in Studio Arts, or simulating running a small business in Accounting, or applying their skills in investigating open ended questions in Mathematics.
This means students who aren’t so good in the exam setting have many other opportunities for assessment tasks that demonstrate their strengths. Students with persistence and a try-hard attitude, can do very well in the Australian VCE Curriculum. Our international Senior School is also focused on transition to University by promoting an independent, responsible attitude to study, but is also a laptop school. At university, everyone will have laptops, so students need training in appropriate use of technology, software, communication programs, educational programs.
The Australian VCE is also a government-backed curriculum that is recognized around world, and the students’ final study scores generate the Australian GPA called the ATAR which allows students direct entry in Australian Universities. Not forgetting that Australia has some of the best universities in world – EIGHT in top 100 world ranked universities and about 40 universities in the top 3% of all world-ranked universities.
6. KingLead: What do you think a person needs as an innovative talent?
Peter Rogerson, Foreign principal of Haileybury Tianjin:To develop any innovative talent requires application, persistence and resilience. Whether it is academic talent or music or sport, no one is talented at their first attempt, but they may show some potential or aptitude. But with sustained application they will improve their skills and continue to perform. They may have some setbacks – all the best inventors will tell you about setbacks they had as things didn’t work, and this is where resilience is necessary – the quality to keep trying despite obstacles. And these qualities can be taught – not just on sports field, or in music or arts, but even in academic studies.
7. KingLead: How do you think the school should cultivate innovative talents? (it can be explained in terms of curriculum, scientific research, activities, etc.)
Peter Rogerson, Foreign principal of Haileybury Tianjin:In extra curricula activity it is a matter of identifying where real talent lies. All students are different, different interests, different backgrounds, different abilities. So we expose the students to many activities and experiences so they can enjoy a wide variety of opportunities, and perhaps identify some potential or aptitude. Then it is practice and persistence that will develop the talent. And this model works very well on a sports field or in the arts, but can also be applied to academics.
I was a math teacher for 30 years before being promoted to senior leadership. In my teaching days, I taught students tools & techniques they will need to solve the problem, and demonstrated to them. But then as they practice give them slightly different variations of that question to make them think and adapt their knowledge. That’s when real learning begins, maybe they will make mistakes, but that’s okay, they can learn from their mistakes, because we are developing innovative talent, the ability to adapt and solve problems is true mark of a talented person in whatever field they choose.
Rather than memorizing facts, it is the process of applying skills that is real learning, and these skills are transferable to other problems in life, and develop not only innovative talent but also life long learners.
8. KingLead: What do you think is the most innovative pattern in your school?
Peter Rogerson, Foreign principal of Haileybury Tianjin:As well as having a very comprehensive curriculum – and academics are always given highest priority, we also have a wide-ranging extra-curricula program with activities such as sports, performing and practical arts, or academic interests such as robotics and programming – so many things; and as a boarding school we have the time to offer these activities after school, and before dinner time.
Within our sports offering we have formed two partnerships with well known external providers –NBAPlayzone for basketball, and the Juventus Football Academy. These partnerships ensure we are delivering well recognized coaching programs to our students. But beyond one or two sports, we have packaged the entire extra-curriculum program into what we call the “Growth and Development Award” in Junior School that requires students to complete a well-balanced schedule of activities – there must be physical exercise, with at least one team sport, one personal development activity where they are learning a new skill and one semester of a community activity where they are developing a social awareness and responsibility.
Younger students will also take an excursion where they are learning beyond the school gates, and older students an expedition where they will camp out overnight. This program develops students in a range of different areas and supports our desire to encourage a well-rounded student, who is willing to have a go at new challenges, is adaptable and resilient.
9. KingLead: With the rapid development of digital and artificial intelligence today, for international schools, how to better grasp the future development direction?
Peter Rogerson, Foreign principal of Haileybury Tianjin:As mentioned earlier, in the post-compulsory years we have introduced laptops to properly train the students in digital technology before they enter university or the wider world. For our junior students we have a number of “portable laptop laboratories” for teachers to use. These portable laboratories are carts of laptops that are being charged between use and are available for teachers to borrow for their class, and students can use them as required.
We see AI as a growth industry of the future, so we have recently opened a dedicated STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) laboratory, and have increased the teaching of STEM through our curriculum, but also offer it as part of our after-school extra curricula program – so offer robotics, coding, 3D printing, Virtual Reality, etc.
We are very near the Gaocun Science and Technology Innovation Park (GSTIP) which when completed will be a major hub of science and technology, and already some potential tenants will be developing AI, so we are looking to build relationships with these neighbors as a way to foster students’ interests and trying to prepare our students for a future that is still being written!
10. KingLead: What kind of schools do you think will be able to quickly create a brand and become a famous school in the next 3-5 years?
Peter Rogerson, Foreign principal of Haileybury Tianjin:I hope we have done that in 8 years since Haileybury Tianjin opened in 2013 – but it is not possible to do it alone – we had the backing of Haileybury Melbourne who in 2022 celebrate their 130th year of education, and 20 years working with some great partner schools across China. So to some degree Haileybury Melbourne was able to transfer their years of experience, of resources, of academic excellence, to a well resourced Tianjin Campus; just like a mother teaches the child. Both myself and my International Principal, Mr. Yanni Galanis, are from the Melbourne campus, and many Tianjin staff have traveled to our Australian “mother”school for immersive training, and every senior international school teacher is a sharer in the mentoring relationship that Melbourne provides us in Tianjin. So the short answer to the question is a school can quickly build a famous reputation that is partnered with a school that already has it!
