He is nothing but a fool.
He is all but a fool.

关于anything but，nothing but，all but三者的区别，一直是很多人特别容易混淆的语法点，今天英大就来说说这三者的区别。
anything but
=not at all, by no means, never，表示“决不，根本不”。
He isanything buta scientist.
他决非科学家。
His English isanything butcorrect.
他的英文错误百出。
艾薇儿有一首歌，叫作：Anything But Ordinary，翻译成中文就是：绝不平凡。
nothing but
=only，表示“只不过，除了……以外什么也没有”。
Nothing buta miracle can save her now.
现在只有出现奇迹才能救活她。
He'snothing buta no-good bum!
他不过是个没用的懒汉。
前几年大热的电视剧《三十而已》大家还记得不？它的英文名字就是：Nothing But Thirty。

all but
=almost, nearly，表示“几乎，差一点”。
It wasall butimpossible to read his writing.
他的笔迹几乎没法辨认。
Reiner, 56, hasall butconceded the race to his rival.
56岁的赖纳差一点就向他的对手认输而使比赛结束。
all but还可以用来表示“all except”的意思，即“除了...之外，所有都...”：
I answeredall butthe last two questions on the test.
我做完了测试中所有的题目，除了最后两个问题。
Europe will be represented inall buttwo of the seven races.
7场比赛中除了2场之外, 都将有欧洲的代表参加。
