枉凝眉

One was a flower from paradise,

一个是阆苑仙葩，

One a pure jade without spot or stain.

一个是美玉无瑕，

If each of the other one was not intended,

若说没奇缘，

Then why in this life did they meet again?

今生偏又遇着他；

And yet if fate had meant them for each other,

若说有奇缘，

why was their earthly meeting all in vain?

如何心事终虚化?

In vain were all his anxious fears

一个枉自嗟呀，

All, insubstantial, doomed to pass

一个空劳牵挂。

As moonlight mirrored in the water

一个是水中月，

Or flowers reflected in a glass.

一个是镜中花。

How many tears from those poor eyes could flow,

想眼中能有多少泪珠儿。

Which every season rained upon her woe?

怎经得秋流到冬尽，春流到夏！

大卫·霍克思（David Hawkes ），英国汉学家，他的重大成就是翻译一百二十回的《红楼梦》全译本，他名之为《石头记》，这是英语世界第一个《红楼梦》全译本，也是西方汉学史和翻译界一件大事。

霍克思为中国文学走向世界做出了重大贡献。他也专研楚辞、杜诗等著作。
