Thank you, dear Yu Yuan, for your kind invitation to welcome the participants of this event, which is targeted at Chinese experts.

First of all, I would like to take a step back and express my great pleasure for experiencing an increased and sustained interest by Chinese experts from industry and academia in IEEE’s activities.

I am particularly pleased to see that it is not only the numbers of participants and projects that are soaring; the high quality and degree of sophistication of the projects are very remarkable.

As an example, while the idea of federated learning for algorithmic systems was initially conceived and promoted by experts in the US, it was Chinese industry that initiated, and partly accompliced, related standardization projects at IEEE.

Generally, we see that participants from China bring to the open, deeply participatory systems of IEEE, and thus share openly with interested parties from all around the world, very good ideas and concepts in key emerging and high-tech areas, such as health robotics, UAVs, high speed trains, AI systems, block chain, etc.

The election of Yu yuan as the SA President for the years 2023-2024 (as far as I know, the first IEEE SA President outside of North America), is another element of IEEE SA’s success story of engagement in this important region of the world.

Yu Yuan is also an internationally renowned expert in Metaverse matters, so I will leave it to him and the other experts to guide you through this emerging world. From my perspective, Metaverse is both a long-term vision and a reality in certain aspects, closely related to the digital transformation which is becoming a strategic goal for many industries and societies.

Beyond a practical results-oriented digital transformation, the afficionados of Metaverse are driven by esthetics and a certain narrative, that would like to see Metaverse as an indistinguishable juxtaposition, even a superposition to the real world.

An augmented physical world is a very intriguing concept, but for my Platonic taste, the physical world will always be infinitely superior and preferable to any version of the virtual, which, btw, may become dysfunctional faster than reality.

At a more pragmatic level, education, health, entertainment, remote working, myriads of little AI assistants in our everyday life, and optimization of industrial processes as well as urban planning are some of immediately evident application areas of a successful digital transformation. A lot is already happening, and the recent waves of the pandemic have accelerated these processes.

For a rapid escalation and in order to avoid undesired lock-in effects by dominant players that may dwarf all dystopias we have been experiencing from the platforms of the recent Internet era, open and transparent - not company proprietary - standards will be essential.

IEEE is offering its standardization processes and all necessary support in order to make progress at this very essential front, and we are happy to see the enthusiasm and energy of several communities, including from China, who are engaging with us.

Before I conclude, I would like to offer you my assessment about where we stand with respect to a very essential aspect of the realization of virtual reality environments as one of the constitutional elements of any Metaverse.

The key success criterion for the construction of any virtual reality environment is that the real world participant, me or you, cannot easily distinguish it from the physical world.

Beyond still far away features such as smell, taste and other direct or indirect stimulations of our brain by simulated experiences, highest quality of optical illusion and of virtual interlocutors seem to me to be the first important targets to be achieved.

Because of technical challenges and limitations, I believe it will be very difficult to achieve any time soon optical illusions that will be indistinguishable from the real world.

However, at the front of virtual interlocutors (e.g., chatbots) things are different. In my opinion, some companies have already created bots that can interact with a human interlocutor (orally or in writing) in a way that is impossible to distinguish the bot from another human. Unless, of course, you ask the bot whether it is a human or bot and it is instructed not to lie wrt this question. This means, the Touring test has probably lost its usefulness. So, for whatever it is worth, this dimension of the Metaverse is already there, it is not science fiction anymore.

With this, I conclude my welcome address to you and I am wishing you a very successful seminar.
