表示「先后顺序」有哪些花样表达？

following sth

表示「在某事之后」，我们本能地想到了 after ，但老用它会腻。BBC 用了现在分词 following 来说明佩洛西访问在先，我国军事演习在后。大家以后如果需要在写作中表示不同事件的先后顺序可以采用 following。

in the wake of sth

金牌写作用语 + 熟词生义

我们在《》那篇刚学过这个短语，重新复习一遍。wake 在这儿不是作动词，而是作名词，整个表达的意思是「紧随某事之后」，一般用这个表达来表示不好的事发生在某事之后。有些同学可能发现了一个问题，CBS 这篇外刊文章的标题是 in wake of 而不是 in the wake of，是不是意味着 in wake of 也对呢？

非也。标题之所以没有加 the ，是因为标题空间非常有限。所以冠词常常可以省略掉。在正式的文章中，the 是必须保留的。

kick off

表示「开始」，我们马上想到了 start 和 begin 。但 BBC 一个都没采用，而是用上了一个词组——kick off。这个短语男生们可能比较熟悉，指足球比赛中的「开球」。开球意味着比赛开始，所以，后来的 kick off 也可以指某件事的开始。

The chairman's speech will kick off the conference.

会议将以主席的讲话开始。

西方的不同反应

pull off

这个短语有两个主要释义。第一，pull off 可以表示「开车驶离大路」；第二，它可以表示 to succeed in doing something difficult「成功完成」某事，尤其是某件有难度的事情。

文中 pull off what they were threatening 字面意思是「成功兑现中方发出的威胁」。因为前面有 skeptical ，所以我们翻译时需要注意，句子实际传达的意思是，这些分析人士认为「中方的威胁不会成真」。不会成真，意味着只是嘴上说说，没有实际行动。所以我们在翻译时可以用「虚张声势」这个成语来概括。

英汉语序差异

我们汉语常会把「某某说」放在句子开头，而英文常把「某某说」放在句尾。所以翻译成英文时，我们需要遵守英语的习惯。待会大家再观察下后面两句英文，看看是不是这样。

提到「一旦」，有的同学想到了 if，有的想到了 once，看完这篇文章的你以后还能想到 in the event of sth。这个短语用来表示 to tell people what they should do if something happens「如果发生某事，万一」。把这个短语用在写作中是不是显得与众不同呢？

提到「承担担任」，脑中是不是蹦出了 take the responsibility？英语中有很多其他的表达方式，我们多学几个，写作的时候就可以变换出不同口味了。

有哪些表示「承担责任」的花样表达？

01 bear responsibility for sth

除了表示「忍受，忍耐」外，bear 还可以表示 to be responsible for or accept something「承担，负担」。既可以 bear the costs「承担费用」 ，也可以 bear the responsibility「承担责任」。

Developed countries bear much of the responsibility for environmental problems.

发达国家对环境问题负有主要责任。

02 undertake the responsibility

undertake 这个动词也可以用来表示 to make yourself responsible for sth and start doing it「承担，从事」。如，undertake a task 意思是「承担一项任务」，undertake research 指的是「从事研究」。2014 年的考研作文主题是「孝顺」，我们可以用上 undertake the responsibility of doing sth 这个词组来造句：

The younger generation is obliged to undertake the responsibility of taking care of the elders.

年轻一代必须承担照顾长辈的责任。

03 shoulder the responsibility

除了以上两个动词外，我们还可以换上形象的 shoulder。作名词时，shoulder 是「肩膀」。肩膀能扛东西，所以后来 shoulder 有了动词用法，表示 to accept a difficult or unpleasant responsibility, duty etc「承担」责任、义务等。

He has had to shoulder the responsibility of his father's mistakes.

他得为他父亲的过错承担责任。

04 take the blame

在这个词组中，blame 不是动词「指责」，而是指 responsibility for doing sth badly or wrongly，即坏事或错事的「责任」。

The government will have to take the blame for the riots.

政府将不得不对骚乱承担责任。
