Characterisation and toxicity assessment of dusts generated in the artificial stone benchtop fabrication and coal mining industries Exposure to fine particulate dusts generated in the workplace is an emerging health epidemic both in both China and Australia, and globally.

This UNSW Australia based project forms part of a much larger priority research scheme funded by the Queensland Office of Industrial Relations, which has been tasked to facilitate Australian investigations into occupational lung disease, particularly for coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (Black Lung disease) and silicosis.

As such, this project seeks to understand the relationship between particulate composition and lung disease using advanced particle sampling and characterisation techniques, coupled with cellular assays investigating the biochemical mechanisms instigated by particle deposition using novel lung cell models. Through close industry interaction, this project aims to develop a greater understanding of the hazard posed to workers and how these hazards might be mitigated, as well as providing fundamental biological insight into disease progression, including investigating treatment options.

The Liu Qian Research Group of McGill University now fully awards graduate students from 2023-2024. McGill University is one of the top 50 public research universities in the world. The school is located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Liu Qian's research team used the self-developed super resolution microscope based on single molecule positioning technology and structured light fluorescence microscopy technology to study the whole process of virus infection, including virus invasion, replication, assembly and release.

The postgraduate program enrolled this time mainly involves the research on the assembly and release of viruses in host cells using super resolution microscopy and mathematical models. About the Project CO2 injection into geological formations triggers complex physical and chemical interactions at different time and length scales, which are critical to the evaluation of subsurface capacities, operational risks, and storage safety. To reduce the risks during injection and ensure long-term safety, it is indispensable to carry out dynamic simulations that can describe this multiscale process with multiple physics.

Although several simulators are available for simulating underground CO2 storage, there is a need to improve the robustness and efficiency of CO2 storage simulation when a compositional description is used. In this project, we intend to take advantage of the recent development in simultaneous chemical and phase equilibrium calculation to improve the speed and reliability of CO2 storage simulation significantly. The candidate will work on integrating the novel chemical and phase equilibrium calculation algorithm into an in-house compositional simulator for the simulation of CO2 storage in both saline aquifers and depleted petroleum reservoirs.

This requires a robust and efficient calculation of multiphase equilibrium in dynamic simulation. The developed simulator will be applied to analyze both near-wellbore and reservoir-scale problems. We expect that the project will provide a new paradigm on how compositional simulation can be done for various underground CO2 storage processes. We expect to start the project earliest in the second half of 2022. Once the funding is secured, a formal advertisement with the application link will be posted on the DTU webpage.
