The Kitchen God is a popular deity most Chinese would worship every year. The Kitchen God not only watches over the domestic affairs of a family, but he is also a moral force in the lives of all family members. On December 23rd of the Lunar Calendar, the Kitchen God ascends to Heaven to present his yearly report about each family member’s behavior to the Jade Emperor. According to the report, the Jade Emperor rewards or punishes each household accordingly.
Households will offer a sacrifice called “tang gua” to the Kitchen God on this day. Tang gua is a lotus root-like sticky cake made of sugar and honey, a typical Chinese traditional candy. By smearing sticky sugar and honey onto the Kitchen God’s mouth, people try to “close his lips” and “bribe” the Kitchen God into presenting a “sweetened” version of the report to the Jade Emperor.
Families undertake thorough house cleaning on the 24th day of the 12th month in the Lunar calendar, sweeping out the old in preparation for the coming year.
According to tradition, ghosts and deities must choose either to return to Heaven or to stay on Earth during the last month of the year. It is believed that to ensure the ghosts and deities' timely departure, people must thoroughly clean both their bodies and their dwellings, down to every last drawer and cupboard.
People turn the mill and make tofu on the 25th day of the 12th month in the Lunar calendar, as legend says the Jade Emperor will descend and taste the soybean curd residue to experience an austere life.
According to Taoist mythology, the Jade Emperor is the Taoist ruler of Heaven and all realms of existence below, including that of Man and Hell. He is one of the most important gods of the Chinese traditional religious pantheon.

The folk saying goes: "butcher a pig and get some meat to prepare for the New Year feast" on the 26th day of the 12th month in the Lunar calendar.
In the old days, many people could not afford meat and they saved the best for the New Year feast. People's livelihoods have improved greatly and meat is now a very common dish in daily diet, but the Chinese still prefer having meat during festival season.
People kill chickens and go to market to buy provisions for the Spring Festival on the 27th day of the 12th month in the Lunar Calendar. With the approach of the Lunar New Year, Chinese people prepare ingredients and food they need for the New Year feast. Chicken is an indispensable dish.

Besides meat and side dishes, people also should prepare staple food for the Spring Festival on December 28th of the Lunar Calendar, and the most popular staple food is steamed sourdough buns in north China. The history of using sourdough to steam buns in China has been for more than 2000 years. The sourdough influences the taste and aroma of the steamed buns.
Nowadays, in many places of north China, people still follow the custom of making steamed buns to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The steamed bun is the symbol of reunion and happiness. It can also be used to pray for favorable weather and prosperity during the coming year. Colored steamed buns not only tastes soft and delicious but can also be made into different shapes. Some even regard making steamed buns as a folk art the custom.

Chinese people are supposed to stay up the whole night on the 30th day of the 12th month in the Lunar Calendar
In Chinese mythology, a monster called nian would come out to harm people on New Year's Eve, so people get together, staying up and chatting, hoping for a peaceful passage of time. The custom of staying up (Chinese: shou tai sui) symbolizes the warding off of all diseases and disasters and wishing good luck in the New Year.
Chinese people attach great importance to the Spring Festival Eve, when all family members eat dinner together.
