近日,宁波诺丁汉大学理工学院传来喜报,化学工程与工艺专业张宏峰斩获剑桥大学的录取通知书。截至发稿时,化学工程与工艺专业胡世越和宋一璇也拿到了剑桥大学的offer。
这个专业的学生缘何特别受到名校的青睐?
两段扎实暑研经历获赏识
纵览张宏峰的简历,大三逼近90分的优秀成绩、班级前1%的排名,数次荣获省级和校级奖学金,学术表现可谓杰出。但在张宏峰看来,两段扎实的暑期科研项目经历,让他能够在剑桥面试中侃侃而谈,最终获得面试官的赏识。
大二暑期,张宏峰选择了与个人导师研究领域相关的旋流管输送粉料气动装置研制。该项目旨在帮助工厂节能减耗、降本增效。他解释,传统的风力输送装置多用直管,粉料容易沉积在管壁内,不仅能耗高而且材料损耗较大,这一直以来都是粉体输送不可避免的技术难题。相比之下,他们要研究的项目所设计的涡旋流管能够让粉料均匀分布,解决了沉积问题,使得工厂对连续输送粉料、低磨损低能耗的期待成为现实。
张宏峰表示,在参与设计装置时他能够将课堂学习的工业设计内容成功地应用到实操中,完美实现了理论与实践的统一。
初试科研项目后,张宏峰很快意识到自己在科研方面的热情。大三暑假,他就目光转向了材料,并参加了生物石墨烯材料的设计与开发暑期科研项目。石墨烯因其非凡的特性在材料学、能源、生物医学等方面具有重要的应用前景,是一种未来革命性的材料。然而从矿石中提取石墨烯虽然纯度高,但资源有限。因此研发以天然绿色植物秸秆等为原料的生物质石墨烯,更加符合可持续发展的要求,推动产业绿色转型。
张宏峰在项目组中则主要负责数据的分析与评估。通过计算比较,评估不同方法生产的生物质石墨烯对环境的影响,为未来合成高质量、高收率的石墨烯材料提供方法参考。
正是这两段科研经历,不仅成为他简历上浓墨重彩的一笔,更是帮助张宏峰明晰了自己对职业的期待与规划,让面试官看到了他极强的未来可塑性。
宝藏专业的无限可能性
在宁诺求学的四年时光,张宏峰认为学校独特的教学内容与实践对自己的专业、职业发展有着巨大的影响。在谈到对专业的理解时,他表示:
很多人可能对生化环材有一些误解,觉得毕业之后只能去化工厂,但我在宁诺感受到的截然相反,非常想为我们专业正名。这是一门就业前景非常广泛的学科,可以在医药、生物、材料等领域探索。我个人更想向金融方面发展。
数据显示,在英国,化学工程与工艺专业的本科毕业生起薪在所有专业中排名第三,仅次于牙医和医学类专业。一张具有“国际认证”的学位证书,是学生们升学和就业的一块金牌敲门砖。在宁诺化学与环境工程系,往届毕业生的就业去向包括联合国环境署驻北京办事处、摩根史坦利中国、埃克森美孚公司及各级政府环境保护部门。2020届化学与环境工程系的毕业生数据显示 ,选择继续深造的学生中超85%的毕业生进入了全球大学排名前50的大学深造。
在张宏峰看来,学校提供的一系列英式课程内容,是自己在一众竞争者中脱颖而出的一大关键。宁波诺丁汉大学化学工程与工艺专业拥有英国化学工程师协会认证和英国材料、矿物和矿业学会认证,为中国内地唯一获得双认证的高校。张宏峰便是英国化学工程师协会的一名学生会员。
在教学方式上,他提到,宁诺的课程以小班化教学、合作式学习为特点,通过一系列设计任务引导学生自主学习,将所学知识进行创新性的应用,同时注重学生安全与环境可持续意识的培养。在专业师生比在1:8左右的情况下,学生几乎可以获得明星教授的一对一指导。
我的个人导师是Philip,他有很多年的企业工作经验和教学经验,教授过化学与环境工程系大部分现有课程,大家都很喜爱他。我还特别感激他能够帮我模拟面试辅导,模拟之后,我在面试剑桥的时候就没有那么紧张了。
回顾大学四年,张宏峰觉得过得很充实。不仅在学业上收获了满意的结果,而且在学校活动和社团中结交了不少朋友,攀岩社、飞盘社、乒乓球社……作为一名健身爱好者,平日里和朋友一起运动无疑是最放松的快乐时光。
我喜欢在这种自由包容,支持个人多元化个性化发展的环境里求学,我很幸运当时选择了宁诺。
UNNC Chemical Engineering students win Cambridge offers
The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) recently received good news. Hongfeng Zhang, Shiyue Hu and Yixuan Song, all students of Chemical Engineering, have successively received offers from the University of Cambridge.
In Hongfeng’s opinion, it was not his exceptional academic performance, ranking in the top 1% or winning provincial scholarships, but his research experience that helped him excel during the Cambridge interview.
During the summer vacation in his second year, Hongfeng worked on a project to develop a pneumatic device which conveys powder through a cyclone tube that contributes to solving the traditional problem of high energy consumption and material loss, helping factories save energy and reduce costs. During the process, he successfully integrated theory with actual practice, and soon realised his passion for scientific research.
The summer after, Hongfeng participated in the summer research placement programme on design and development of bio-graphene materials. The team aimed to develop biomass graphene from natural green plants to promote the green transformation of the industry to achieve sustainable development. Hongfeng was responsible for the data analysis and evaluation in the team, providing a methodological reference for the future synthesis of high-quality and high-yield graphene materials through computational comparison.
This scientific research experience helped Hongfeng to clarify his future plans for his career path. In addition, the university's unique curriculum and practices have had a huge impact on his professional and career development. “UNNC has shown me that Chemical Engineering is a subject with a very wide range of career prospects and can be explored in the fields of medicine, biology, and materials. Personally, I'd prefer to move into finance," said Hongfeng.
In the UK, the starting salary of undergraduates studying chemical engineering ranks third among all majors, second only to dentists and medical related majors. A degree certificate with international accreditation substantially enhances students’ competitiveness in further study and employment. At UNNC, previous employment destinations of graduates from the School include the UNEP office in Beijing, Morgan Stanley China, ExxonMobil and environmental protection departments of government at all levels. According to the employability report, more than 85% of Class 2020 students who chose to continue their studies were admitted to world top 50 universities.
To Hongfeng, the International education he received at UNNC is the key to making him stand out from others. The undergraduate course in Chemical Engineering at UNNC has dual accreditation from the Institution of Chemical Engineers (UK) and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (UK). The seminars and cooperative learning mode aim to cultivate active learning skills and encourage innovative application. He appreciates his personal tutor, Dr Philip Hall, who spent extra time in order to help Hongfeng prepare for the interview.
Looking back on his four years at UNNC, Hongfeng feels fulfilment with both his academic and personal life. He made friends in university activities and societies such as rock climbing, flying disc sports, and table tennis. "I like the idea of studying in a free and inclusive environment that supports individual development, and I’m glad I chose UNNC."
