“In Praise of Soils”, Shanghai's first major soil-themed exhibition has been started at the Pearl Art Museum.

Through 5 chapters the exhibition presents a range of art forms including installations, models, specimens, experiments, videos and paintings. It offers audiences a novel experience of art popularization, green innovation and interactive participation. Within this sensory experience that can be observed, heard, smelled and touched, attendees can rediscover the wonders of soil and broaden their perspectives to see the world anew.

The audience said it was a great exhibition. An audience told us:" The material is from earth, so it's logical to start from what nature offers to us. Good things from environment are also good things from art. Because we can create from nature, we see that we don't have to introduce the artificial materials. I think we have to do it and we can do that. And I am an art teacher in the French school, I will transmit it to my students."

One of the sculptures shaped like a residential building. The artist created the artwork with clay reveals a certain contradiction of inherent soil showcasing the qualities of softness and hardness, fragility and strength conveying the healing power of nature.

The artist Shao Lei said:" In the real life, it is often associated with tension and fast-paced environments including the current living conditions and activities of people. Through my dialogue with clay, I find a sense of comfort and relaxation.I use this material to convey my ideasaiming to create a feeling of vulnerability and tranquility."

Over 100 exhibits in 32 groups created by 6 domestic and overseas artists presenting a new exploration and practice of the soil integrates scientific research with artistic creation. Starting from redefining the concept of "soil" to fully utilizing its potential, it explores sustainable development models and seeks a positive and balanced relationship among technology, humanity, and nature.

The exhibition will be on display until March 17th 2024. Visitors can go to the Shanghai Pearl Art Museum to learn more.
