At dusk, Su Yuanbao finished a day's work and returned to his residence. This is the "New Era Builders and Managers' Home" in Minhang District. He rented a bed here for 500 yuan per month.

Su Yuanbao, the tenant, showed journalist around his room and said, “This is our cooking area and over here is the washing area. This is the bathroom and these are our four beds. It's my bed.”

Su Yuanbao, 40 , from Linyi of Shandong Province, lives apart from his wife and children. He works for a property management company nearby. He sends most of his income back home.

Over a year ago, he rented in the surrounding area, where the rent was high but the facilities were outdated. After moving here, even though he only rented a bed, he can also enjoy a shared kitchen, bathroom, activity room, washing machine and dryer. Therefore, he has a more comfortable living environment and can send back more money to his family.

Su Yuanbao said, “So many convenient conditions and a good living environment makes me feel more confident about my future plans. It also brings me one step closer to reuniting with my family in our own place.”

Unlike Su Yuanbao, Liu Zhicong, a young man born in the 2000s from Shangrao, Jiangxi Province. He has moved into an affordable rental apartment in Xinzhuang Business District (where they) have their "own room", with the help of his mentor.

Liu Zhicong is a game producer of Shanghai Fangpisa Software Technology Co Ltd. He told the reporter that, “We get along well together and he always helps me a lot. I am just like settling here.”

Liu is involved in the research and development of metaverse products which belongs to the four new industries in Shanghai. This has been his dream since graduation.

Currently, this "room" not only serves as a living space, but also a shared workspace belongs to him and his mentor.

“The first morning I woke up, I will never forget that surreal feeling in my life. You can see the Shanghai Tower and even the Oriental Pearl TV Tower from here. Perhaps one day I will be on the top floor there,” said Liu.

In Minhang, besides the option of "renting a bed" or "renting a room", you can also choose "renting a full house."

Li Jingyi, an engineer at a semiconductor company, has been in Shanghai for 12 years and dedicated to the integrated circuits industry. She has experienced a similar "bed" and "room." Now with continuous effort and a daring spirit, she has not only progressed significantly in her career, but also achieved her dream of having a "full house" in Wujing Town.

Li said, “Things that were not possible before, such as keeping a cat or exercising at home, can be realized now, because of moving here and my friends also living nearby. I enjoy cycling. I have even made friends with many cyclists in the neighborhood. This has deepened my connection with this city. I feel the overall atmosphere of the city and this area is particularly good as well.”

The current multi-level rental housing supply system in Minhang has become a microcosm of the Shanghai Housing Project. These housing resources prioritize the needs of frontline construction workers and managers in the city as well as consider the balance between work and residence for industries, parks, and universities in the region. In terms of supporting facilities and services, they provide sufficient guarantees for the dreamers.

Yang Yongjian, the director of the Minhang District Housing Management Bureau claimed that, “Our goal can be summarized in one phrase, ‘Comfortable, Livable, Pursuing and Fulfilling Dreams’. Through our efforts, we hope to enable every striver in Shanghai to achieve their dream of a comfortable home, thus achieving our goal of talent aggregation and the realization of the national dream of major industrial and strategic development. When each individual's small dreams are fulfilled, they will converge to ultimately achieve our country's dream of becoming a strong nation and achieving revitalization.”

From renting a bed to renting a room, even to a full house, it not only records the struggles of young people and new residents, but also showcases the care and efforts that the city has provided for hardworking individuals.

Resident A told journalist, “I am currently looking for a job and I believe that in this big city of Shanghai, there are unlimited possibilities for me through my efforts. I hope to achieve economic independence as soon as possible.”

“I attended university in Hefei, Anhui Province. I feel that Shanghai is a place full of opportunities and perhaps I can find a way that suits me. My current small goal is to reach a management position in the field of security.” said Resident B.

Resident C stated that, “I mainly work in brand promotion right now. I hope to grow and develop together with my hometown Shanghai.”
