“罗蕾莱”是德国一座岩山的名字，位于莱茵河畔，高132米，紧邻的莱茵河弯度很大，水流湍急，暗礁林立，漩涡四起。19世纪以前，尤其到了冬季大雾弥漫的时候，往来的船只经常在此处发生翻覆悲剧。
德国诗人布伦塔诺在1801年出版的小说《哥德维》(GodwA)中，第一次把“罗蕾莱”作为“魔女”的名字。
传说Loreley是莱茵歌神的女儿，她有一头漂亮的金发，长得十分美丽。白昼潜伏水底，夜间浮出水面，坐在高高的岩石上，望着来往的船只。她迷人的歌声随风飘入水手的耳中，可怜的水手便会迷失本性，忘记自己的工作，不可救药地爱上她，最后撞到礁石上，船毁人亡。
为了看一眼罗蕾莱，无数男人付出了生命的代价。美丽在这一刻，是罪。
这个传说引发了当时许多浪漫主义诗人的雅兴，他们写下了众多以此为题材的诗篇。最著名的是德国诗人海因里希·海涅1824年创作的《罗蕾莱》。
海涅（Heinrich Heine，1797-1856）是十九世纪在欧洲影响力最大的诗人之一，更是“唯一始终为马克思所承认在文学上有伟大成就的人。”（柏拉威尔，1982）
这首《罗蕾莱》是他的爱情诗代表作。当时海涅正遭受失恋的打击。他痴心爱恋着自己的堂妹安玛丽·海涅（Amalie Heine，1800-1838），然而安玛丽对他并不来电，至始至终对他冷漠如霜，最后她嫁给了一位富家子弟。
诗中美丽的女性罗蕾莱面对船夫的倾慕同样是无动于衷，高高在上，甚至没有低头看船夫一眼，最后船夫却因痴迷她的美貌和歌声丢掉了性命。诗中美丽却又冷漠的女性无疑是海涅对安玛丽的写照。
对读者来说，海涅笔下的罗蕾莱就是德国版塞壬（Siren）女海妖的化身。用美妙的歌声魅惑行人的传说早在古希腊神话中就已出现，荷马史诗《奥德修纪》中就曾描绘过塞壬女海妖。
塞壬女海妖是河神埃克罗厄斯的女儿，是从他的血液中诞生的鸟首人身或人首鸟身的美丽妖精。因为与缪斯比赛音乐落败而被缪斯拔去双翅，从此无法飞翔。
失去翅膀后的塞壬日日在海岸线附近游弋，有时会变幻为美人鱼，用天籁般的歌喉诱惑过路的航海者，使航船触礁沉没，船员则成为她的腹中餐。
塞壬居住的小岛位于墨西拿海峡附近，在那里还同时居住着另外两位海妖斯基拉和卡律布狄斯。她们常年出没此地，那一带海域堆满了受害者的白骨。
在希腊神话里，英雄奥德修斯率领船队经过墨西拿海峡，他事先得知塞壬女妖有着令凡人无法抗拒的致命歌声，于是命令水手用蜡封住耳朵，并将自己用绳索绑在船只的桅杆上，方才安然渡过。
海涅创作的《罗蕾莱》与古希腊神话有所不同，在诗中，罗蕾莱不是一个恶毒害人的女妖，而成了一个美丽女性的化身。在诗中，没有人魔之间的善恶斗争，只有因美丽而带来的悲剧性的忧伤。

唐代诗人孟郊的《巫山曲》，和海涅的这首《罗蕾莱》有相似之处。每个人的心中都有自己的巫山神女，每个人心中都有一个罗蕾莱，荆王梦中的“巫山神女”想必就是船夫们心中的罗蕾莱吧。

人的一生中难免会遇到各种各样的诱惑，究竟该如何面对？纵然英雄如奥德修斯，面对诱惑，也需要借助外力，将自己用绳索绑在桅杆上方才安然渡过墨西拿海峡，更多普通的水手，因为经不起这诱惑，定力不够，最终船毁人亡，葬身大海。
面对诱惑，或者说是面对自己心仪的东西，你心甘情愿付出自己的所有甚至生命吗？无所谓值不值得，各人的心中会有不同的答案。愿赌服输，选择了就不要后悔。爱情如此，事业亦如此。
罗蕾莱的传说不仅引发了各种诗篇，也演绎出不少同名歌曲，这个版本的《Loreley》，演唱者为英国Blackmore's Night夫妻音乐组合中的妻子Candice Night。Candice Night的歌声极具魅力，就象Loreley，用魅惑的歌声施展魔法，让人听了开头就欲罢不能....
