With the upcoming primary to secondary school enrolment lottery and middle school examinations, an increasing number of parents are considering educational transitions. We've received a lot of inquiries and expressions of concern from parents and so, we interviewed William's parents, who switched from a bilingual education system to Harrow Shanghai at the critical transition from primary to secondary. Her "dilemmas" and "decisions" might provide guidance and direction for many more parents.

谈及孩子在小升初阶段转轨的缘由，William妈妈说道：“其实缘自于我们在原有教育体系中遭遇的挑战。相比外教资源的损失，英语授课比例大幅减少更令我们担忧。”

“其次我们倾向于选择A Level教学体系，相较于IB体系需要承担六门课程的学习压力，A Level体系只需精进三门课程，对于学科优秀的孩子，这无疑更利于他们的发展。”

Speaking about the reason for William's transition from primary to secondary school, William's mum shared, "It actually stems from the challenges we encountered in our original education system. Compared to the loss of foreign teacher resources, we were even more concerned about the significant reduction in English instruction time. ”

“We also preferred the A Level teaching system; unlike the IB system, which requires study across six subjects, the A Level system demands depth in only three subjects. For children who excel in their chosen subjects, this is undoubtedly more advantageous for their development."

首先，当我们决定从双语学校转轨至国际学校时，A Level体系是我们的首选，而哈罗上海无疑是这一体系中的佼佼者。

Firstly, when we decided to transition from a bilingual school to an international school, we chose the A Level system as our preference, andHarrow Shanghai is undoubtedly a leader within this system.

Secondly, we hope for our child’s fluency in both Chinese and English.The dual mother-tongue teaching philosophyadvocated by Harrow Shanghai aligns with our aspirations.

While English is the main language of instruction in the school, the importance of Chinese education is not diminished. We learned that Harrow Shanghai uses the national Chinese textbooks that are synchronized with domestic Chinese education, which further strengthened our decision to choose Harrow.

I firmly believe that a child who struggles to understand his mother tongue will inevitably face limitations in learning a foreign language.

来到哈罗上海后，我们也快速领略到了这所国际学校与过去所经历双语教育体系的显著差异。

在这里，孩子们的教育旅程不仅是知识的累积，更是个性、兴趣与责任感的养成。

首先，哈罗上海的ECA（课外活动）不仅丰富多彩，而且选择众多。William因热爱生物学而选择了昆虫学的ECA。他曾对之前的ECA感到失望，觉得学不到实质内容，但现在，他每天都充满期待，因为这些ECA是能让他真正学到东西，有所成长的。

此外，国际学校在校园霸凌和学生关怀方面表现更佳。哈罗上海对校园霸凌持零容忍态度，这也是我们选择该校的重要原因之一。

值得一提的是，学院制是哈罗上海的一大亮点。虽然在双语学校也有学院制，但孩子们往往缺乏强烈的归属感和集体荣誉感。William进入哈罗后被分配到拜伦学院，他经常自豪地告诉我，他们的学院是最棒的、最整洁的，学院的同学也非常友善。可见，他已真正融入了这个集体，他的一举一动都代表着学院的荣誉。

哈罗上海还格外注重公益慈善活动，为孩子们提供了众多公益项目，旨在培养他们的爱心、对生命的尊重以及平等对待生活中所有事物的态度。这种教育理念在双语学校中是无法体验的，也让我对哈罗上海的教育方式更加赞赏和认可。

After coming to Harrow Shanghai, we have quickly appreciated the significant differences between this international school and the bilingual education system we have previously experienced.

Here, the children’s educational journey is not only about knowledge accumulation but also about the development of individuality, interests, and sense of Leadership & Service.

Firstly,the Extra Curricular Activities (ECA) at Harrow Shanghai is very diverse. William chose entomology ECA due to his passion for biology. He used to be disappointed in previous ECAs as he didn't learn substantial content, but now, he looks forward to every day because these ECAs allow him to truly learn and grow.

Furthermore, international schools show better concern and care for students in terms of campus bullying.Harrow Shanghai adopts a zero-tolerance attitude towards bullying, which is one of the important reasons we chose this school.

Worth mentioning is the House system, a highlight of Harrow Shanghai.Even though the bilingual school also employs a house system, children often lack a strong sense of belonging and collective honour. After joining Harrow Shanghai, William was allocated to Byron House, and he often proudly tells me that their house is the best and the cleanest, and the housemates are very friendly. It's clear that he has truly integrated into the group; his every move represents the honour of the house.

Harrow Shanghai also places great importance on public welfare and charity activities.They provide numerous public service projects for the children, aimed at nurturing their compassion, respect for life and an attitude to treat everything in life equally.This education philosophy is something absent in a bilingual school system, and it makes me appreciate and recognise the educational approach of Harrow Shanghai even more.

小班化教学模式下，

我与孩子的共同蜕变

"Parents & School Co-Education"

哈罗上海小班化教学也给William带来的巨大变化。

曾经，William在公众场合表达自己总是感到胆怯，但自从进入哈罗上海后，小班化的教学模式让他有了更多展示自己的机会。老师经常在家长群里分享孩子们演讲的照片，我看到William在台上的样子，那是他以前从未有过的自信。

与此同时，我的心态也发生了转变。

之前，我一直希望时刻把控孩子的学习进度和情况，但来到哈罗上海后，外教们认为家长不必过多介入孩子的学习，应该培养他们自主学习的能力。

William外教的话让我豁然开朗：“我觉得你们不需要过多帮助孩子，因为我们的班级规模很小，我可以关注到每个孩子的学习情况。我能准确了解每个孩子的掌握程度，并及时给予反馈。”的确，在以前的学校，每个班级有24名学生，每节课40分钟，老师怎么可能关注到每个学生呢？

上次William数学考了98.5分，他兴高采烈地回家分享了这个好消息。虽然我差点脱口而出想问有多少孩子考了满分，但最终还是忍住了，转而大力称赞他的进步。而他也主动提到了班里有一个同学考了99分，这种变化让我感到非常欣慰。这也说明我们家长在跟随学校一同成长，我也逐渐学会了放手。

Harrow Shanghai's small-class teaching has brought significant changes to William.

He used to be shy expressing himself in public, but since he started at Harrow Shanghai, the small-class teaching model has given him more opportunities to showcase himself. Teachers often share photos of children's presentations in WeCom groups, and when I saw William on stage, he had a confidence he never had before.

At the same time, my mindset has shifted.

Before, I wanted to constantly control my child's progress, but since we came to Harrow Shanghai, the international teachers believe parents do not need to intervene too much in children's learning and should cultivate their capacity for independent learning.

William’s tutor enlightened me by saying: "I don't think you need to help your child too much, as our class size is small, I can pay attention to every child's learning. I can fully understand each child's level of understanding and provide feedback promptly."

Last time, William scored 98.5 on his Math test, and he came home elated to share this good news. Although I almost inadvertently asked how many kids got full marks, I held back and instead lavished praise on his progress. He also voluntarily mentioned that a classmate scored 99. This change made me very delighted. This shows that we parents are also growing with the school, and I gradually learned to let go.

当初参观学校时，我惊讶地发现，无论是员工还是老师，都能叫出全校孩子的名字，这让我深切感受到了学校对孩子们的关爱和重视。同时，学校对学生的安全问题也格外关注，这让我作为家长感到无比安心。

在哈罗上海，家校之间的沟通成本大大降低。家长可以通过线上线下各种渠道，第一时间将自己的意见和建议传达给校长。这种高效的沟通方式让我觉得非常难得和实用，也极大地增强了家长和学校之间的互动和信任。

最后，我想谈谈关于国际学校不重视学术的刻板印象。一提起国际学校，很多家长可能还停留在“快乐学习”、“不卷”的印象中。但实际上，哈罗上海今年有53%的毕业生进入了G5高校，这一成绩在任何学校都是非常出色的！这也是哈罗上海给我的一个惊喜。

它让我意识到，这所学校不仅注重孩子们的全面发展，还非常重视学术和升学。

而且，哈罗上海A Level学科的多样性也是很多重理轻文的双语学校或培训机构所无法比拟的。

在中国，想要找到在历史、政治、文学等文科方面的顶级A Level师资几乎是不可能的，但在哈罗上海今年的毕业生去向中，我们看到了很多文科专业的存在。

当然这得益于哈罗上海在A Level文科专业方面所拥有的强大师资阵容，包括剑桥大学英语文学专业的校长和牛津大学政治经济学专业的高中部校长都亲自授课，为孩子们提供了最优质的教育资源和指导。

这一切都让我对哈罗上海的教育质量和教育理念更加信任和认可。

In terms of Parent & School relationships, I also admire the way Harrow Shanghai handles them. At the initial school tour, I was astounded to find that all teachers, and even other staff, can call out every child's name in the school. This gave me a deep sense of the love and attention the school gives to the children. At the same time, the school is extremely attentive to student safety, which makes me, as a parent, feel incredibly reassured.

At Harrow Shanghai, the cost of communication between home and school has greatly decreased.Parents can communicate their opinions and suggestions to the Head Master at the first instance through various online and offline channels.This efficient way of communication seems extremely rare and practical to me, and it greatly strengthens the interaction and trust between parents and the school.

Lastly, I want to talk about the stereotype that international schools do not value academics. When it comes to international schools, many parents might still cling to the image of "happy learning" or "non-competitive atmosphere". However, in reality, this year 53% of graduates from Harrow Shanghai are going to prestigious G5 universities, which is an excellent achievement for any school! This was a pleasant surprise to me from Harrow Shanghai.

It made me realise that the school not only cares about the holistic development of the children but also places a heavy emphasis on academics and university applications.

Moreover, the diversity of A Level subjects at Harrow Shanghai is unmatched by many 'emphasis on science and neglect of liberal arts' bilingual schools or training institutions.

In China, it's almost impossible to find top A Level resources in arts subjects like history, politics, and literature. But in this year's university applications from Harrow Shanghai, we spotted many arts and humanities subjects.

This is thanks to the prominent faculty that Harrow Shanghai has in A Level arts courses, includingthe Head Master, who studied English Literature at Cambridge, and the Head of Senior School, who studied Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford, are personally teaching and providing top resources and guidance for the children.

All these make me more trusting and appreciative of the education quality and philosophy of Harrow Shanghai.
