英国私校协会评估监督机构ISI(全称Independent Schools Inspectorate),是由英国政府批准,专门考察评估英国本土和私立海外分校的机构。
IGCSE成绩同样出色,70%获得A*或A成绩,其中A*率更是达到了35%。

“How do you define a good British international school?”
“Why does Harrow Shanghai claim to be an outstanding international school?”
“Is there a standard to measure whether Harrow Shanghai is a qualified British school?”
Parents interested in choosing a British curriculum international school often reach out with similar questions. Today, Harrow Shanghai will guide you through what makes an excellent British International School.
The Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) is a body approved by the British Government for the purpose of inspecting independent schools in England and overseas. ISI reports to the English Department for Education (DfE) on the extent to which schools meet the Standards for British Schools Overseas (BSO). The inspection is a combined one of Educational Quality and Compliance. This is the most rigorous of the international school accreditation systems.
Harrow Shanghai, which offers an authentic British education for students, has been inspected by the British Independent Schools Inspectorate and awarded “BSO” (British Schools Overseas) status. It is delighted to announce that Harrow Shanghai has passed with flying colours.
The inspection team was led by one of the UK’s most experienced inspectors, and it included two experienced international Heads who were also very experienced inspectors. They were impressed by the school and agreed with our self-evaluation, actually rating us higher than the school did. They placed us at or near the top of the scale in all categories.
Let’s see what impressed
the inspectors.
Academic Excellence
Harrow Shanghai adopts the British National Curriculum, bridging IGCSE and A Level, staying in line with the curriculum in the UK. Rooted in Shanghai, also integrate Mandarin and Chinese culture courses, helping our students grow into global citizens with a global perspective.
The inspectors noted that an average of 73% of our A Level grades were an A*/A over the past four years, in comparison with the average of 26% in England. IGCSE scores were similarly strong with 70% achieving A*/A grades and 35% of them getting A*. Our data shows that pupils make good progress from their starting points, and that performance was strong across the school.
“Progress is rapid for children in the early years as they find their confidence in a stimulating learning environment. Pupils in Primary School successfully build on this strong foundation as shown in the quality of both their literacy and numeracy development.” The inspectors commented.
Academic performance is sustained throughout the school, as a result of which “by the time pupils leave the school, they are well equipped academically to transfer to a range of universities across the world, some of which have highly competitive entry criteria.”
A Broad Curriculum
The team also noted the breadth of our curriculum: “pupils develop their knowledge, skills and understanding to a good level. This is enabled through access to a broad curriculum which is supported by an extensive range of Extra-Curricular Activities (ECAs).
Harrow Shanghai offers over 150 mandatory extracurricular activities (ECAs) that cover body (sports), mind (academics), and soul (arts and others). In addition to specialized courses like Equestrian, Rowing, Baseball, STEAM, and Beijing Opera, Harrow Shanghai has introduced new activities this year, such as Indoor Skiing, Archery, and Scuba Diving. Our 'Saturday Sport' programme is also now available for students.
Communication Skills
The inspection team also noted the strength of our pupils’ communication skills. Students articulate their thoughts and ideas well. Students of all ages use subject-specific language which enables complex thought, and thus they have access to the highest range of marks in examinations.
Watch them in action at the recent TEDx Harrow, where students from Harrow Shanghai took to the TED stage to showcase their impressive lecture skills and imagination for the world of tomorrow.
Technology
In other areas of the curriculum, pupils are “well-versed and skilful” with ICT and “leaders successfully ensure they know how to use technology to be ‘creators and not just users’.
During Free Thinking Week, Year 10 students used an AI tool and Canva to display their ideas about their past and future lives. With the use of our new Class VR Headsets, Primary students experienced different places globally, alongside a trip around the worlds with their teachers.
Sense of Community
“The quality of the pupils’ personal development is excellent.”
“Pupils have a deep sense of belonging.”
Care is a strength: “pupils feel cared for by staff.”
Harrow Shanghai's small class sizes, with an average teacher-to-student ratio of nearly 1:7, ensure that each student receives ample attention. In the Early Year, each class is staffed with a full-time expat teacher, a bilingual teaching assistant, and a carer. In the Primary, expat class teachers lead the classes, supported by bilingual teaching assistants. The differentiated instruction based on level of ability allows each student to progress at their own pace and follow their developmental path.
Each student joins four distinct Houses, aligning with the tradition at Harrow School in the UK. Every teacher and house tutor are very aware of the students' potential and support they need. The comprehensive Pastoral Care system offers children vast opportunities and personalized attention.
We are delighted that the BSO inspectors have confirmed that our school is delivering an exceptional standard of education, and that they have seen our warm and wonderful school at its very best.
