米迪运河又名南运河,是沟通地中海和大西洋比斯开湾间内陆水路系统的主要连接线。运河东起地中海港口城市,埃罗省的塞特港,西至上加龙省首府图卢兹附近与加龙河相接。运河采用了梯级船闸、水库、渡槽、大坝、桥梁和隧道等设施,体现了当时最先进的工程技术。十七世纪,路易十四执政时期开始修建米迪运河。法国工程师皮埃尔一保罗•里凯负责设计工作。设计师创造性的构思,使运河与周边环境巧妙地融为一体,从而产生一种和谐美的效果,堪称工程技术史上的佳作。1996年被联合国教科文组织列入世界遗产名录。

The Canal du Midi, also known as the Southern Canal, is the main inland waterway connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean’s Bay of Biscay. It begins at the Mediterranean port city of Sète in the Hérault department and extends west to connect with the Garonne River near the capital of the Haute-Garonne department, Toulouse. The canal is equipped with a series of locks, reservoirs, aqueducts, dams, bridges, and tunnels, showcasing the most advanced engineering techniques of its time. Construction of the Canal du Midi began during the reign of Louis XIV in the 17th century, with French engineer Pierre-Paul Riquet leading the design. His innovative approach seamlessly integrated the canal with its surrounding environment, creating a harmonious aesthetic that stands as a masterpiece in the history of engineering.In 1996, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
