Many plants depend on insect carriers to transport pollen from flower to flower to fertilize their seeds. Without insect carriers, there would be far fewer fertilized seeds to produce plants, such as the fruits and vegetables that are so important to our diet. We would also lose our beautiful flowers.Flowers reward visiting insects with pollen and nectar, which insects use for food. Nectar is essentially sugar water. The mouth parts of flower-pollinating insects are adapted for sucking it up. Butterflies, for example, have mouth parts that are hollow tubes, like drinking straws. As an insect moves in and out of a flower, its body becomes dusted with pollen. The insect transfers pollen to other flowers it visits, and this is how pollination of plants takes place. You could say that when it visits a flower, an insect exchanges pollen for nectar. Bees are great pollinators. They are social insects. They live in colonies that have many workers. Worker bees collect pollen and nectar and transport both back to the hive. There, the nectar is deposited in chambers, or cells, for storage. Bees gather and store amazing quantities of pollen and nectar. A single colony of bees harvests about 44 pounds of pollen a year.
