Halloween不是万圣节！

先看看词典上Halloween的定义：

《牛津词典》中写得清清楚楚，Halloween是10月31日的晚上，应该叫“万圣前夕”或“万圣夜”。

其实这个意思从Halloween这个单词中就能看出来。Halloween由两个部分构成Hallow和een。hallow是词根，作名词表示“圣徒”，现在很少使用，而后缀een，其实是e’en省略撇号的结果，而这个撇号代表v字母。所以een= e’en=even，而even有“夜晚”的意思，这是个古老的用法，现代英语中evening还能见到even的影子。

另外，even还衍生出eve一词，表示“前夜”，比如“除夕”是the eve of Chinese New Year，“平安夜”是Christmas Eve。

综上所述，Halloween就是Hallow’s eve，即“万圣夜”，是“万圣节”的前一天晚上！

万圣节用英语怎么说？

我们所谓的“万圣节”其实是Halloween过后的第二天，即11月1日，英语中叫作All Saints’ Day。

这个Saint跟Hallow意思一样，都表示“圣徒”，所以也叫All Hallows’ Day。

不过，目前北美地区（包括美国和加拿大）不过11.1万圣节，只过10.31的Halloween。

万圣节诞生之初是为了纪念逝去的圣徒，所以是一个纪念亡灵的节日，跟我们的中元节、清明节有些相似，并不是一个欢乐的日子。

万圣夜习俗

(1) Halloween costume

Dressing up in costumes is one of the most popular Halloween customs, especially among children. According to tradition, people would wear special clothing, masks or disguises to frighten the spirits away. Popular Halloween costumes include vampires, ghosts and werewolves.
万圣装扮是最受欢迎的风俗之一，尤其是受孩子们的欢迎。按照传统习俗，人们会穿戴一些特别的服装、面具或者装饰来吓跑鬼魂。流行的万圣节服装包括吸血鬼、幽灵和狼人等。

(2) Trick or treat

Trick or Treating is a modern Halloween custom where children go from house to house dressed in costume, asking for treats like candy or toys. If they don’t get any treats, they might play a trick (mischief or prank) on the owners of the house.
“不给糖就捣蛋”是现代万圣节的风俗，孩子们穿着万圣装扮走街串巷，讨取糖果和玩具之类的赏赐。如果他们得不到任何的赏赐，就可能会对屋主大搞恶作剧或者胡闹了。

(3)Jack o’ Lantern 南瓜灯

The tradition of the Jack o’ Lantern comes from a folktale about a man named Jack who tricked the devil and had to wander the Earth with a lantern. The Jack o’ Lantern is made by placing a candle inside a hollowed-out pumpkin, which is carved to look like a face.

万圣夜的南瓜灯叫作Jack o’ Lantern，来自一个民间传说。一个名叫Jack的人戏弄了恶魔，所以死后无处可去，只能提着一盏灯在人间流浪。Jack o’ Lantern是南瓜做成的，外壳雕刻成脸型，中间挖空并插上蜡烛。
