Republican candidate Donald Trump declared victory early Wednesday in the 2024 US presidential election. China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning commented on the outcomes on the same day at a regular press conference in Beijing that the presidential election of the US is its internal affair and China respects the choice of the American people.

Responding to Trump's remarks that the tariffs on China would be sharply raised, Mao said that "we do not answer hypothetical questions".

"China's policy on the US is consistent. We will continue to view and handle our bilateral relations under the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation." Mao added.

As to whether China would congratulate Trump if he ultimately wins, Mao said "we will handle relevant matter following customary practice" in response to a question on the subject. (By Ma Ziqian/China Youth Daily)
