White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Monday defended the US President Joe Biden's decision to pardon his son Hunter despite telling the press multiple times that the president had no such plans.
She added: "Hunter was singled out, and because his last name was Biden, because he was the president's son. That's what we saw. And so the president believed enough is enough, and the president took action, and he also believes that they tried to break his son in order to break him."
Hunter Biden was convicted of three felony firearm offenses in a Delaware trial earlier this year, and then pleaded guilty to multiple felony tax offenses in September. The sweeping pardon covers any potential federal crimes that 54-year-old Hunter may have committed over the course of a decade.
The US President-elect Trump reacted to Biden's surprise decision to pardon his son Hunter on Sunday. "Does the Pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the J-6 Hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years?" Trump wrote. "Such an abuse and miscarriage of Justice!"
Several Democrats in Congress spoke out on Monday against Biden's decision to issue a broad pardon of his son Hunter Biden, criticizing the action as one that would further erode Americans' already waning faith in democracy and the rule of law. Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, Democrat of Washington, said the president's move offered proof of a two-tiered justice system that treated the wealthy and politically powerful differently from everyday Americans.
