In accordance with this commitment, we monitor our publication process, proactively examining articles at every stage, and are currently conducting detailed investigations into select published papers.

A recent audit of published articles in Science of the Total Environment conducted by Elsevier’s Research Integrity & Publishing Ethics team uncovered concerns regarding practices that do not align with our policies, such as unusual authorship changes, compromised or manipulated peer review, undisclosed conflicts of interest, and tortured phrases. Impacted authors are in the process of being notified and will be given an opportunity to respond to allegations. Investigations are ongoing and over the forthcoming months we are dedicated to correcting the scientific record in a timely, responsible and transparent manner.
