Kerry
Dream Student!
Kerry

Kerry
Kerry:
连续两年获得启明星学校最高等级奖学金学者奖;
国际学校“纵横杯”中文辩论赛全程最佳辩手、单场最佳辩手;
NHSDLC美式辩论联赛北京城市赛最佳辩手(第一名);
作为唯一的中国学生,参加在英国举行的GCI峰会(下图);
滑铁卢数学竞赛卓越奖和10年级冠军;
英国数学测评金奖、学校最佳荣誉奖;
9、10年级GPA满分7分;
——Kerry

What kind of person has the capacity to thrive in an ever-changing world?
"Honesty, diligence, and dependability, are what is expected for employees in all positions... A person's character and moral qualities are essential, far more important than any university label. That's why Daystar Academy has emphasized character education from the very beginning.
Furthermore, students should be able to look at problems comprehensively regardless of their field of study, learning some basic social science knowledge, including economics, political science, literature and art, because as a good global citizen, you need comprehensive analytical abilities to make good judgments."
——Cai Jinyong,
Co-Founder of Daystar Academy,
Former Executive Vice President and CEO of the World Bank's International Finance Corporation (IFC)
Our eleventh grade student Kerry Wang is already on his way to becoming a social innovator. From the perspective of his teachers he is:
Kerry Wang has been studying at Daystar for 12 years, since preschool.
Careful Consideration
Kerry Wang’s parents are from Beijing. His father graduated from Beijing No. 4 High School and Peking University's Electronics Department. Twelve years ago, it was after very careful consideration that such a family would choose to send their child to a private school.
"I saw how my colleagues and friends who chose public schools for their children had to put in so much effort. That kind of intense life is not what we want. In addition, we hope he has more freedom and choices to do what he likes. So we decided to choose a different kind of education," said Kerry’s father.
After visiting several private schools, none of them seemed quite right. Finally, at Daystar, they were able to end their search for the right fit.
"Only Daystar's admission process made us feel it was serious and rigorous," said Kerry’s father. "After the interview, the teachers gave us professional feedback, even reminding us that Kerry had written some English letters backwards, and we needed to pay attention to that."
"Over the past 12 years, we have grown together step by step with the school. The small class size here ensures personalized attention to the need of every student, and the school's core values also align well with our family," Kerry’s father said. "For example, Daystar places a strong emphasis on character education. I remember when Kerry was six or seven years old, he used some inappropriate words in class. I was called to the school, and three teachers met with me for more than half an hour about this issue."
The impact of the school's commitment to character cultivation is particularly evident in Kerry Wang.
"When Kerry was in tenth grade, he participated in an English oral exam. The topic was literary analysis, and he needed to record a video and submit it online. It must have been quite difficult, and he kept stumbling over it, getting frustrated until 1 a.m.! But even then, he would never consider putting up a cheat sheet behind the camera; he absolutely refuses any form of academic dishonesty," his father said.
A Dream Student
Kerry Wang's honesty and relentless pursuit of excellence are qualities his teachers recognize and appreciate.
For example, his IB Diploma Programme Chinese teacher and Chinese debate team coach, Ms. Wang Lingfang– after just half a year of knowing him- has placed him among the "best students" she has ever taught.
"Kerry has many years of experience in Chinese debate competitions, which has laid a good foundation for his academic thinking and ability to quickly respond. Of course, the rapid communication techniques used in debate can create habitual communication patterns - so when Kerry began preparing for the DP Chinese oral exam, he intoned without stopping. I joked with him about 'admiring his lung capacity', but also pointed out strategies he could use to improve; he immediately took them to practice. A week later, I was amazed - his language was not only precise and fluent, but also calm and gentle, completely transformed. Later, he achieved an excellent, well-deserved score on the Chinese oral exam."
Kerry’s English studies are equally outstanding. Daystar's bilingual Chinese-English education starts from preschool, and shifts more heavily towards English in high school. After 12 years at Daystar, English has become his primary academic language. He consistently scores high in English language and English-taught courses, while also participating in Chinese and English debate competitions.

Mr. Joseph LeDoux, Kerry’s English humanities teacher who has taught him for six years, gave him what might be considered the highest praise a teacher could give: "I hope I can be his teacher every year!"
Kerry's ability to balance his heavy academic load and various activities, while maintaining excellent performance, stems from his social innovation qualities and embodiment of the IB learner profile attributes.
"He is a balanced learner, skilled at negotiating and excelling between academic preparation and university planning. He is often able to handle sudden real-world situations and challenges, and he cares for himself and his classmates with a humorous way of dealing with difficulties. As the author Wang Meng once described, “in the midst of laughter, one can see the solemn and sincere soul.” Kerry reflects on his academic growth in a timely manner, which also drives his courage to attempt new problems and engage in new opportunities. He is truly deserving of every one of the 10 IB learner profile attributes," said Ms. Wang Lingfang.
Kerry, who has made the pursuit of excellence a habit:
Awarded the Daystar Scholar Scholarship for two consecutive years (Sole recipient in grade)
Division A Distinguished Speaker in Zongheng Cup International School International School Mandarin Debate Tournament
Opens Division Top Speaker in National High School Deabte League of China
Attended Global Citizens Initiative Global Summit in the UK (pictured below)
Received the Distinction/Champion in Grade 10/Honour Roll Group IV in University of Waterloo CEMC Math Contests
Awarded Gold Certificate/School’s Best Honor Award in United Kingdom Mathematics Trust Math Contest
Maintained perfect GPA of 7.0 in both Grades 9 and 10
Recently achieved a perfect score of 120 in the TOEFL exam
Outstanding Leadership
What's heartening is that Kerry Wang is not content to thrive individually he also influences his fellow students with outstanding leadership—
"The atmosphere in Chinese class is very good, with classmates actively discussing and focusing together. When others share engaging opinions, he will listen attentively while everyone speaks freely, taking notes accordingly. If the discussion starts to veer towards 'unknown' territory, he will go along with the direction of the discussion, then bring it back on track. Of course, almost all the students are able to engage comprehensively, as they are all cultivating good DP qualities," said Ms. Wang Lingfang. "And of course, in the debate team, he is always prepared to 'back up' his teammates, letting them feel a strong sense of support and unity."
This style of Kerry's extends beyond the classroom, as he has great relationships with his peers. Mr. LeDoux said he has seen on several occasions students go to consult Kerry first when they have doubts about something, even before asking the teacher.
"The academic atmosphere at Daystar is so positive, providing a good soil and coordinate system for children with high self-expectations, as well as quality sources and resources for children who seek the truth freely. So I'm very glad and it's only natural that we've encountered a student like Kerry," Ms. Wang remarked with some emotion.
Factors For Growth
Everyone must be curious about the reasons behind his growth into a dream student. After our interview, we tried to summarize a few key points:
Family influence is huge. In his growth, Kerry Wang’s father has played an especially important role, alongside his mother. His father attends parent-teacher meetings, picks him up from school, openly discusses his academic highs and lows with him, and was also the one who made the crucial decision to enroll him at Daystar. In modern families where fathers are often absent, such companionship is particularly important, especially for boys.
The school's influence is undoubtedly also important. His elementary school Chinese teacher, Ms. Shi Yuhua, commented that Daystar fully respects students’ environment and gives them confidence, allowing them to boldly explore and be their true selves. Kerry’s father also said that every day, Kerry goes to school happy and relaxed, and only when a child is in this state can they grow in the best way.
Of course, most importantly, Kerry Wang fully embodies Daystar's core values and the IB learner profile. Whether it's studying, reading, playing basketball, exercising, collecting books, coins and commemorative stamps, or doing internships at companies in other cities... he gives it his full effort. Even when facing difficulties, he is not bothered by hardships or setbacks, because he is doing what he truly loves.
Kerry has a wide range of interests
He is also a collector of medals and books
"I have not wasted a single moment in this world. I strive for the things I'm interested in, fight for the causes I care about, and cherish every day."
——Kerry
In another year, Kerry and his classmates will graduate and embark on their university journey. We wish him and the other Daystar students who are equally sincere and unique all the best as they set out to leave the mark on the world.
