Mia worked late most nights.
Her office was on the14th floorof a tall corporate building, and by the time she left, the place was usuallyempty.
The only sound was the soft hum of the elevators, waiting in the dimly lit lobby.
One night, as she stepped into theelevator, she pressed theground floorbutton like always.
The doorsslid shut.
The elevatordidn’t move.
Mia frowned, pressing the button again.
Nothing.

Itstarted walking toward her.
Fast.
Miaslammed the button. The elevator doorsshut just in time.
The panel flickered again.
Then, suddenly—
The elevator was on the ground floor.
Mia ran out, gasping for breath. The security guard at the front desk looked up.
“Are you alright?” he asked.
Mia turned, staring at the elevator.
Theupbutton was still glowing.
But thedigital display was blank.
The guard frowned.
“That elevator’s broken.”
Mia’s bloodran cold.
“What do you mean?”
The guard sighed.
“It hasn’t worked in years. It doesn’t go up. It doesn’t go anywhere.”
