NEWS FROM THE MOVEMENT
Apalachicola Riverkeeper(Florida, U.S.) recently challenged a permit granted to Clearwater Land & Minerals Fla. for oil and gas drilling near the Apalachicola River. In response, Senator Corey Simon and Representative Jason Shoaf filed bills to impose stricter approval standards on such projects. The bills aim to protect Florida's freshwater rivers and coastal shorelines by requiring the DEP to conduct a "balancing test" to assess the potential environmental impact before issuing permits. With this initiative, Florida's ecosystems and water resources will be safeguarded from the detrimental impacts oil and gas drilling projects have on natural resources.
French Broad Riverkeeper(North Carolina, U.S.) welcomed Anna Alsobrook as its new Riverkeeper. Anna has been an invaluable member of the French Broad Riverkeeper team for the past ten years, embracing river adventures, complex advocacy efforts, and environmental sampling, all while prioritizing meaningful clean-up initiatives. She is prepared to excel in her new role, leading the organization's work to protect and restore the French Broad River.
Great Salt Lake Waterkeeper(Utah, U.S.) and the Utah Rivers Council are opposing a recently passed economic development bill that created the Beehive Development Agency (BDA). The groups argue that the BDA's broad authority, including planning, bonding, land use, and taxing, could increase water rates and further endanger the already threatened Great Salt Lake. They are particularly concerned about the potential for fast-tracked water projects that could negatively impact the environment and local communities. Great Salt Lake Waterkeeper is urging the public to voice their concerns about the potential consequences of this legislation.
Miami Waterkeeper(Florida, U.S.), Rachel Silverstein, is partnering with the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida to appeal the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)'s decision to allow Turkey Point to become the first reactor in the country to extend run time for 80 years, which is beyond their original permits. This extension poses a higher risk of nuclear disaster to South Florida communities.
Built in 1967, the Turkey Point facility in south Miami-Dade county provides power to about three million people, and is extremely vulnerable to flooding and excessive heat from the climate emergency due to its low-lying position. Additionally, a toxic plume from the plant's cooling canals threatens to contaminate the Biscayne Aquifer, the source of drinking water for millions. The groups argue that these conditions are a disaster waiting to happen, citing past nuclear disasters and the NRC's failure to address climate change risks.
Ogeechee Riverkeeper(Georgia, U.S.) recently created a BlueSky starter pack featuring the accounts of Waterkeeper groups from around the world, allowing users to connect with and follow their work.
Ottawa Riverkeeper(Canada) recently received a $75,000 pledge over five years from the Welch Community Foundation to support their mission of protecting and improving the health of the Ottawa River. The funding will support vital science and education programs, such as River School, which teaches youth about ecosystem health, and the Ottawa Riverkeeper's Learning Lab at the NCC River House, a public interactive education space.
Spokane Riverkeeper(Washington, U.S.)recently received a $23,000 donation from the Redband Rally Fund and the Spokane Indians to support their work in restoring and protecting the Spokane River. This funding will enable the Riverkeeper to purchase equipment for on-the-water litter removal, including a raft and trailer, and to support a summer intern. The donation also provides inflatable kayaks for outreach and educational activities. This initiative, launched in 2017 in collaboration with the Spokane Tribe of Indians and the City of Spokane, aims to ensure a clean and healthy Spokane River where native Redband Trout can thrive.
Waterkeepers Bangladesh( Bangladesh) is actively raising awareness and advocating for the protection of the Sundarbans mangrove forest. They recently participated in a rally on Sundarbans Day to highlight the threats of climate change and industrial expansion, where speakers criticized the Rampal Power Plant's pollution and unsustainable practices.Waterkeepers Bangladesh also held a three-day workshop with DHORA to develop environmental protection, climate justice, and advocacy strategies.Additionally, they conducted leadership training with Dhora on Sundarbans Day to address water pollution and advocate for the Sundarbans' protection. Finally, they organized a drawing competition and discussion with Dhoritri Rokkhay Amra to celebrate Sundarbans Day and raise awareness about its importance. These initiatives demonstrate Waterkeepers Bangladesh's commitment to preserving the Sundarbans,a critical ecosystem for biodiversity and local communities.

ADVOCACY RESOURCES
To support an effective opposition strategy against attacks on clean water, environmental protections, and policies, Waterkeeper Alliance has created a repository of tools and resources for Waterkeeper groups. This repository, available here, will be regularly updated based on policy developments, priorities, challenges, and opportunities. This content initially focuses on the U.S. presidential election and its implications for environmental issues, as it was created in response to requests from U.S. Waterkeeper groups. It was not intended to be exclusionary; however, we must consider that many of the policy decisions and actions from the Trump administration are likely to have global ramifications. For example, how has the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement affected your region? Do you fear it will undermine global efforts to combat climate change? Are there other specific challenges or opportunities related to the political and environmental landscape in your region that we should be aware of? To ensure we are meeting the needs of all Waterkeeper groups and strengthening a united global response to clean water attacks,we encourage you to share feedback with Bart Mihailovich, Waterkeeper Membership Services Director,to inform timely and tailored support for your advocacy efforts.
