"These photos once lay forgotten in British attics or museum archives," says Prof. Robert Bickers. Over 18 years, his team scoured the globe for China’s visual history. The most striking collection came from a retired engineer’s basement—his grandfather, a customs officer in 1900s Hankou, captured daily life along the Yangtze River.

While most historical photos remain monochrome, a set of Kodachrome slides stuns viewers: rickshaw pullers waiting near bomb shelters, women drying indigo fabrics by the river, a storyteller in a teahouse—all captured in vivid color by British pilot John Wilson during WWII.
