Ms. Charlotte Titterton

INTERNATIONALWOMEN'SDAY
At Harrow Shanghai, the power of women is not only recognised but actively nurtured. Around 60% of the school’s staff are women, with female leaders making up an impressive two-thirds of the senior management team. Meanwhile, the student body maintains a near 50/50 gender balance. In a school where female leadership thrives, every woman’s voice is heard, valued, and respected. They are empowered with confidence, courage, and the opportunity to pursue their aspirations.
What does female leadership mean?
As one of the leading organisers of this year's International Women's Day (IWD) activities, Ms. Charlotte shared her thoughts:
Ms. Charlotte Titterton
Headof Humanities
Sustainability Coordinator
"Female leadership, to me, means empowering women and girls to step into their full potential, embrace their unique strengths, and lead with confidence, empathy, and resilience. It's about breaking down barriers, challenging stereotypes, and creating spaces where women's voices are heard, valued, and respected."
Teacher Training (TTT):
Creating a More Inclusive
and Equitable Education
from the Classroom
Teachers play a crucial role in empowering young girls. As part of this year's IWD events, six female teachers led a Teachers Teaching Teachers (TTT), engaging in in-depth discussions on the role of women in society, education, and student development. Through personal stories, insights, and expertise, they explored ways to foster confidence in the workplace, develop female leadership, and dismantle gender biases to ensure that every student has the opportunity to thrive in a fair and inclusive environment.
Charlotte reflected:"For teachers, I hope they take away practical strategies to support and encourage girls in their leadership journeys, as well as a renewed commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment in their classrooms and schools."
Speaking Up:
Hannah’s Malala Speech
During this week’s assembly, Year 5 Hannah shared her reflections on Malala Yousafzai’s biography. Malala’s inspiring fight for girls’ rights to education left a profound impact on her and prompted the whole school community to reflect:What can each of us do to contribute to gender equality?
Empowering Girls Through Education
To mark IWD, Harrow Shanghai's teaching team curated a range of activities designed to help students explore female intelligence, creativity, and leadership across different subjects and contexts.
Inspiring Leadership
Through Literature
In the school library, Jessica L., Head of English in the Upper School, captivated younger students with stories about female leadership. Through literature, the children discovered how remarkable women from diverse backgrounds overcame obstacles to achieve their dreams.
Cross-Disciplinary Creativity:
Older Students Leading the Way
Upper School girls took the lead in guiding younger girls through a series of creative workshops, including jewellery-making, floral design, and mathematical challenges. These activities provided a platform for self-expression through art and nature, while challenging stereotypes through problem-solving and logic. More importantly, they demonstrated leadership in action,"Our world is shaped by our own hands."
When Boys Become
Advocates for Gender Equality
True gender equality is not about making girls stronger, but about fostering a shared understanding that supporting women is a collective responsibility. During IWD, boys from Years 5 to 8 participated in dedicated discussions, reflecting on:
01
How do women’s roles in society shape our world?
02
How can men be active advocates for gender equality?
03
Why does equality benefit everyone?
Embracing Female Empowerment and Endless Possibilities
At Harrow Shanghai, the commitment to empowering women extends far beyond IWD—it is embedded in daily teaching and school culture. From classroom discussions to everyday interactions, the school remains dedicated to fostering an environment ofinclusion, respect, and diversity, where every student is encouraged to grow with confidence and ambition.
