The Mourning Day

Du Mu

A drizzling rain falls like tears on the mourning day;

The mourner’s heart is going to break on his way.

"Where can a wine-shop be found to drown my sad hours?”

A cowherd points to a cot amid apricot flowers.

The Mourning Day

Gao Zhu

There’re many graveyards in northern and southern hill;

On Mourning Day the mourners come and weep their fill.

Burnt paper money flies as white as butterflies;

The bloodlike tears are shed and dye azeleas red.

At sunset foxes come back to lie there at night;

At home the mourners would laugh by the candlelight.

While he is alive, a man should in wine be drowned.

When dead, could he drink a drop of wine underground?

The Mourning Day

Wang Yucheng

With nor flowers nor wine I passed the Mourning Day,

As drear as a friar begging all the way.

I asked my neighbor for new-made fire last night,

Lighting my lamp at dawn, I may read by its light.
