In Chicago, a 50-foot-wide lot is extremely rare and a valuable resource. However, some homes fail to make the most of this extra width. One such historic home in Ravenswood had a rear addition in the early 2000s that severed its connection to the tree-filled back and side yards. Now, with the ingenuity of designers, this old house has undergone a magnificent transformation with the use of charred wood and glass.
The exterior design of this renovation skillfully combines two materials, charred wood and glass, to create an appearance that coexists harmoniously with nature. The charred wood, processed using the traditional Japanese 'Shou Sugi Ban' technique, wraps around the newly added parts. With its deep color and natural texture, this unique wooden exterior complements the black frames of the doors and windows, not only adding texture to the building but also enhancing its visual hierarchy. Moreover, the charred wood is not simply glued to the building's exterior. Instead, it is separated from the exterior moisture barrier by furring strips, forming a 'rainscreen' structure. This design allows moisture behind the siding to drain harmlessly, extending the lifespan of the building materials.
The large glass elements are another highlight of the exterior design. In particular, the 14-foot-wide and 7-foot-tall folding glass NanaWall blurs the boundary between the interior family room and the exterior terrace when fully folded and hidden in the corner. This design not only erases the distinction between indoor and outdoor spaces but also enables family gatherings to easily spill over to the terrace and outdoor kitchen, effectively doubling the usable area of the family room. In the Midwest climate, an insect screen is essential. The designers have ingeniously created a seamless storage space for the Phantom insect screen, which can be hidden when not in use and easily deployed when needed. To create such a large glass door opening, a carefully designed structural frame is required. The designers collaborated closely with structural engineers, door suppliers, and insect screen manufacturers to ensure the smooth implementation of this design detail at the construction site.
Entering the historic home, the restored traditional elements come into view first. The century-old interior wooden staircase has been renovated, with worn balusters and posts repaired, giving it a new lease on life. This not only improves safety but also preserves its original charm. The stained glass window has also been properly restored, and sunlight filters through it, casting colorful shadows indoors. The front parlor, hallway, and fireplace have also been maintained and restored. The retention of these vintage elements forms a sharp contrast with the newly built modern parts, yet they blend seamlessly in the spatial transition.
The newly added part features a split-level design, inspired by other successful projects such as the Wine Enthusiast Retreat and the Cedar House Among the Trees. The family room and mudroom are located on a lower level, four feet below the adjacent kitchen and dining room. This layout not only provides the family room with extra ceiling height. Paired with tall glass walls, it allows light to penetrate deep into the interior, effectively solving the common lighting problem in Victorian architecture. Moreover, the height difference between different floors makes communication between family members in the kitchen and those in the family room more convenient.
The kitchen is the core area of the interior design. The custom bronze exhaust hood is the focal point of the entire space. Paired with the custom range, it sets off the off-white lacquer cabinets. Although the kitchen appears simple and white at first glance, it actually has hidden subtleties. The quartz countertops and backsplash complement the bronze faucets and plumbing fixtures. The custom bronze band that encircles the island counter not only separates the island from the cabinets but also further echoes the plumbing fixtures, adding delicate details to the kitchen.
This historic home in Ravenswood, Chicago, through this renovation, has successfully combined the elegance of the Victorian era with modern minimalism. The exterior design of charred wood and glass connects the building closely with nature, while the interior integration of the old and the new meets the needs of modern life while preserving the historical charm, creating a comfortable, beautiful, and distinctive home for the residents.
