First held in 2009, the ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai is one of the nine ATP Tour Masters 1000 tournaments and the only one in Asia. Its significance is second only to the four Grand Slam events and the ATP Finals. From 2009 to 2013, it was voted Tournament of the Year by ATP players for five consecutive years in its category.

Since 2023, the ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai has been upgraded to a 14-day "Super Masters" event (including 2 qualifying days). Traveling to a city for an event is increasingly becoming a lifestyle choice for many.

The 2024 ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai spanned two weeks, fully covering the October Golden Week, attracting over 220,000 spectators, 70% of whom were from outside Shanghai, creating a joyful and festive atmosphere both on and off the courts.
