Introduction
Since the inception of the concept of acoustic metamaterials, extreme manufacturing acoustics (EMA) and high performance acoustic systems have achieved significant advancements in fundamental scientific research and technological innovation. These developments have paved the way for a wide array of application prospects across various domains, including high precision acoustic sensors, intelligent acoustic devices, deep-sea acoustic detection as well as aerospace and aeronautic acoustic applications. With the aim of further advancing the development of extreme manufacturing acoustics, high performance acoustic systems, and intelligent acoustic devices, there exists an urgent need for advanced manufacturing technologies tailored to the production of acoustic materials, intricate acoustic structures, and system integration. This special issue aims to provide a platform to review cutting-edge manufacturing technologies and advanced applications in extreme manufacturing acoustics, high-performance acoustic systems, and intelligent acoustic devices. Contributions are also strongly encouraged in the areas of artificial and architected materials, innovative structural designs, and emerging engineering methods that support extreme manufacturing and precise acoustic control. The issue seeks to highlight advances that enable: efficient acoustic performance optimization, autonomous or sustainable intelligent acoustic systems, intelligent acoustic sensing applications, human-computer acoustic interaction, environmental acoustic management, advanced flexible, wearable, and implantable acoustic devices. By bringing together these diverse topics, the issue aims to accelerate progress in the design and implementation of next-generation extreme manufacturing acoustic technologies.
Scope
Possible topics, within this scope, include but are not limited to:
Intelligent acoustic metasurfaces: programmable acoustic field control and integration with additive manufacturing
Optimization algorithm-driven acoustic metamaterial design
Multi-physics field coupling metadevice design and verification
Ultrasonic transducer material innovation: lead-free piezoelectric composites and flexible MEMS technology
Biomedical ultrasound: neural regulation, acoustic 3D printing of functional organs, imaging & therapy, drug delivery systems
Extreme environment acoustic design: acoustic radiation control and noise reduction in extreme environments
Cross-scale acoustic manufacturing: from micro-nanoparticle assembly to macroscopic structure formation
Extreme acoustic sensing devices: from theory to application
Innovative applications of acoustic metamaterials in the realm of aeroacoustics and hydroacoustics
