Interpreting the renovation of this century-old Edwardian apartment from an artistic perspective is like a space-time surgery to implant modern life into the folds of history. The designer used the "open center" as a scalpel to embed the minimalist kitchen and bathroom into the historical texture like a contemporary art installation in the century-old house on Liberty Street in San Francisco, performing a spatial drama about "preservation" and "subversion".

用艺术视角解读这座百年爱德华式公寓的改造，恰似一场在历史褶皱中植入现代生活的时空手术。设计师以 “开放中心” 为手术刀，在旧金山 Liberty Street 的百年老宅里，让极简主义的厨房与浴室如当代艺术装置般嵌入历史肌理，上演着一场关于 “保留” 与 “颠覆” 的空间戏剧。

When you push open the apartment door that retains the brass knocker from the 1920s, the floor mosaic at the entrance reveals the code of the design - the left side is a well-repaired hexagonal ceramic tile, and the right side is a terrazzo that continues the pattern. The joints between the new and old materials are like an invisible time watershed. The central kitchen is the climax of this dialogue between time and space: the double-sided cantilevered island counter is made of black quartz stone, but the bottom is supported by red pine beams removed from the old house. The polished metal brackets form a tactile contrast with the cracked surface of the wooden beams. The most exquisite is the "wooden box" design - the designer wrapped the original storage room into a custom walnut cabinet, with no visible hardware on the surface. Behind the push-open cabinet door, there is a refrigerator, laundry equipment and walk-in pantry. This wisdom of "hiding things in form" is in line with the storage philosophy of Edwardian furniture.

The bathroom is a poem of material narrative. The texture of the pink cement wall tiles is like sandstone kissed by time, forming a color echo with the terrazzo floor in the kitchen. The full-height laminated glass partition brings the light from the kitchen into the bathroom. When the morning light passes through the glass, the silhouette of the bather and the figure of the kitchen operator overlap in the light and shadow, forming a daily montage. The edge of the Japanese-style deep soaking bathtub deliberately retains the rough edges of the original stone cutting, forming a tension of "roughness" and "transparency" with the frameless glass door of the shower area. This design of implanting oriental bathing culture into an old western house originated from the designer's experience when he lived in a Kyoto townhouse - those secret hot springs hidden in ancient buildings are just like this modern bathroom in the old house.

浴室是材质叙事的诗节。粉色水泥墙砖的肌理如同被岁月吻过的砂岩，与厨房的水磨石地板形成色彩呼应。全高夹层玻璃隔断将厨房的光线引入浴室，当晨光穿过玻璃，沐浴者的剪影与厨房操作的身影在光影中重叠，构成日常的蒙太奇。日本式深泡浴缸的边缘特意保留原石切割的毛边，与淋浴区的无框玻璃门形成 “粗粝” 与 “通透” 的张力。这种将东方沐浴文化植入西方老宅的设计，源自设计师在京都町屋旅居时的体验 —— 那些藏在古建中隐秘的温泉，恰如老宅里这方现代浴室。

The emotional value of the space is hidden in countless micro-narratives: the "secret hut" designed for the family pet under the stairs has a door frame that replicates the moldings of the original building, so that the puppy seems to be traveling through a miniature historical tunnel when entering and exiting; the LED light strip hidden under the open kitchen shelf reflects light onto the plaster floral decorations on the ceiling at dusk, allowing the century-old decorations to be reborn under modern light; even the position of the bathroom floor drain has been precisely calculated so that the water flow trajectory during drainage coincides with the geometric center of the floor mosaic, transforming practical functions into visual rhythm.

空间的情感价值藏在无数微叙事里：楼梯下方为家族宠物设计的 “秘密小屋”，门框复刻了原建筑的线脚，小狗出入时仿佛穿梭于微型历史隧道；厨房开放搁架下方暗藏的 LED 灯带，在黄昏时分会将光线反射到天花板的石膏花饰上，让百年纹饰在现代光线下重获新生；甚至浴室地漏的位置，都经过精确计算，使排水时的水流轨迹与地板拼花的几何中心重合，将实用功能转化为视觉韵律。

At night, the Liberty Street Apartment becomes a luminous body in the city. When passers-by see the steam from the coffee machine on the kitchen island and the mist on the bathroom glass through the glass curtain wall, they will mistake it for a dialogue across centuries. The designer tells us in the language of architecture: the renovation of old houses is not a simple superposition of the old and the new, but to find the delicate balance between historical memory and contemporary life - just like in the kitchen drawer, modern kitchen utensils and the copper spoons left by the owner's grandmother are placed side by side, each shining with the luster of different times, but together stirring the taste of life belonging to this family. On the undulating streets of San Francisco, this apartment is like an open architectural history book, and every page is written with eternal thinking about "home".

夜晚的 Liberty Street 公寓，成为城市里的发光体。当路人透过玻璃幕墙看见厨房岛台上的咖啡机蒸汽与浴室玻璃上的水雾交织，会误以为是一场跨越世纪的对话。设计师用建筑的语言告诉我们：老房改造不是简单的新旧叠加，而是要在历史记忆与当代生活之间找到那个微妙的平衡点 —— 就像厨房抽屉里，现代厨具与业主祖母留下的铜质量勺并排摆放，各自闪耀着不同时代的光泽，却共同搅拌着属于这个家庭的生活滋味。在旧金山起伏的街道上，这座公寓如同一本打开的建筑史书，每一页都写着对 “家” 的永恒思考。
