2025 East China Sea Fishing Season: Thousands of Vessels Sail Escorted on First Day

At 12:00 noon on August 5, the summer closed fishing season in the East China Sea officially came to an end. Thousands of vessels set sail from coastal fishing ports in Zhoushan, Taizhou, Wenzhou and other cities in Zhejiang Province, with over 10,000 special licensed fishing vessels heading to fishing grounds under the escort of maritime authorities. The scale of this fishing season opening hits a new high in recent years. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transport launched the "2025 Escort for Fishing Season Opening Campaign" to safeguard fishing production through a sea-air three-dimensional supervision network.

At Shenjiamen Fishing Port in Zhoushan, a thousand fishing boats formed a "steel geese formation". Special licensed fishing vessels engaged in pole-and-line shrimp trawling, pot and trap fishing, gillnetting, and light seine netting, loaded with frozen bait and daily supplies, set sail one after another. Nearly a thousand fishing boats from Daishan County took the lead in departing. Skippers stated that they had prepared 500 fishing nets and 40 tons of ice, targeting economic fish species such as pomfrets and horsehead fish in the southern waters of the East China Sea. In Wenling, Taizhou, 206 large fishing boats gathered in Chitou waters, focusing on catching seasonal seafood like swimming crabs and mantis shrimps.

Comprehensive safety guarantees were in place for the fishing season opening. The Ministry of Transport deployed 58 maritime patrol vessels, 1 fixed-wing aircraft and 21 drones from Shanghai, Zhejiang and other regions to carry out "air-sea integrated" escort in key waters such as inbound and outbound channels and fishing areas, with real-time collision risk warnings via the smart maritime system. Zhejiang Maritime Safety Administration also implemented a staggered travel mechanism for commercial and fishing vessels, stationing over 40 maritime patrol boats at fishing ports in Zhoushan, Ningbo and other places to ensure the orderly departure of tens of thousands of fishing boats.

Positive signals emerged on the market front. Hengsha Fishing Port in Chongming shipped back 36,000 catties (18,000 kg) of swimming crabs on the first day, with wholesale prices ranging from 25 to 35 yuan per catty. It is expected that prices will drop in a week as catches increase. Yang Sulan, a "fisherman's chef" in Dongtou District, said that orders for fish balls and seafood food stalls have surged since the fishing season opened, and fresh seafood can be served on the table as soon as the next day.

"We've brought enough ice and diesel, and hope to return fully loaded this time!" said Zhang Zhoujun, a Zhoushan skipper, standing on the deck and looking into the distance. As the "Escort for Fishing Season Opening Campaign" progresses, this harvest feast from the waves to the dining table not only carries fishermen's longing for a better life but also witnesses the vivid practice of China's marine ecological protection and sustainable development.
