Amid the wave of joint exploration into the blue economy between China and Belgium, a “seafood dialogue” centered on the sustainable future of marine ranching is unfolding.
Wim Peeters, Consul General of Belgium in Guangzhou, ventures deep into Huidong’s National Marine Ranch. Together with host Vivian, he sets sail, hauls up the star of the “whole-fish economy”—the black-spotted croaker—and even steps into the role of livestream host at the “One Fish Pavilion.” There, he helps promote this “golden treasure of the sea”: from collagen-rich fish maw and one-of-a-kind otolith earrings, to low-fat, high-protein croaker steaks loved by fitness fans—the full value of the fish comes vividly to life.
In return, Wim Peeters invites Vivian into a boutique supermarket in Guangzhou in search of the prized North Sea grey shrimp. He then unveils a true Belgian seafood feast: tomato-stuffed shrimp and mussels with fries. Behind these tiny grey shrimp lies a UNESCO-listed tradition—horseback shrimping—kept alive today by only about 15 people in all of Belgium. Meanwhile, Belgium is also pioneering innovative marine ranches that seamlessly combine offshore wind power with aquaculture.
From Huidong’s deep-sea cages to Belgium’s wind-and-sea co-farming ranches, from China’s croaker banquets to Belgium’s seafood classics, the two nations—though oceans apart—share the same wisdom and reverence: innovation from the sea.
