mundane可以追溯到拉丁语mundus（世界）。它既可以指“尘世的，世俗的”，比如俗气的商人就可以说“a mundane businessman”，也可以指“单调的、例行的、平凡的”，尤其用于形容日常处理的无关紧要的琐事。外交学院潘绍中教授在翻译林清玄散文《常想一二》时，就将“滚滚红尘”译作“the raucous, mundane world”，别有一番风味。
