When we talk about Instupendo, what are we really talking about? Born in the millennium, he aligns almost perfectly with the idealized time frame celebrated by dreamcore culture. His music, marked by warm, nostalgic tones, has been widely used in dreamcore-related videos and remixes, unintentionally becoming one of the culture’s most recognizable symbols. His 2017 track “Comfort Chain” alone has served as background music for hundreds of thousands of such videos, accumulating billions of plays across platforms, with countless looped, slowed, and extended versions — a clear sign of its massive cultural impact. Built around a short, looping synth phrase, the track evokes vast blue skies and open fields while effortlessly drawing listeners into a world shaped by everyday fragments.

Perhaps Instupendo’s music is the best illustration of this idea. His discovery by countless creators within dreamcore culture came purely from an unintentional resonance. When asked to simply describe what he does, Instupendo calls it “electronic melancholy-nostalgia music.” He excels at drawing inspiration from ordinary, everyday things — which is precisely where dreamcore’s distinctive sense of nostalgia comes from.

而梦核文化的爆发式传播,Instupendo正式以音乐人身份得到大众的广泛关注,正因为黑天鹅事件所引起的全球性焦虑中,由老式3D游戏、VHS和低分辨率照片等一系列元素的融合被人们重新记起,并逐渐发展成一种独特的视觉美学,并进化成覆盖各种媒体载体的微型文化运动。梦核立足于“梦境”之上,而这些来自过去的元素正完美诠释了亲身体验和梦交织所创造出的虚幻记忆它是锚点,时刻提醒着某种安定、平和的过往确实存在,进而演变成一个可供人们短暂逃避的舒适港湾。
正如Passion Weiss在对Instupendo的采访中所说,他的音乐低调、柔和,却又能构建出那些年龄比他大两倍的艺术家都难以企及的氛围,与不同年龄段的人们产生共鸣;这也使得他在一众艺术家中脱颖而出,成为“被选中的那一个”。这一点从他的视觉中同样可以窥见。在Instupendo的MV中,大部分时间镜头对准的是人,而非流行的扭曲图像或者癫狂的色彩,传递出一种具有力量感的温和。
With the explosive spread of dreamcore, Instupendo gained widespread recognition as a musician precisely at a moment of global anxiety triggered by a “black swan” event. Elements such as old 3D video games, VHS footage, and low-resolution photographs resurfaced, gradually forming a distinct visual aesthetic that evolved into a micro–cultural movement spanning multiple media. Rooted in the idea of “dreams,” dreamcore uses these remnants of the past to embody hazy memories created by the overlap of lived experience and dreaming. They serve as anchors—reminders that a sense of calm and stability once existed—eventually becoming a comforting refuge for brief escape.
As Passion Weiss noted in an interview with Instupendo, his music is understated and gentle, yet capable of building atmospheres that even artists twice his age struggle to achieve, resonating across generations. This quality sets him apart, making him “the chosen one” among many. The same sensibility is evident in his visuals: in Instupendo’s music videos, the camera most often lingers on people rather than distorted imagery or frantic colors, conveying a quiet, restrained strength.

I’m a big fan of graphic novels and just visual literature in general. My biggest non-musical inspiration is probably Taiyō Matsumoto, the author of the series ‘Sunny’. My other inspirations are just typical life enjoyment stuff: driving around aimlessly, people-watching, journaling, hanging out with my friends, etc.

Starting in 2015, he began compiling and uploading collections of his work online, where they quickly received strong attention. In early tracks such as Six Forty Seven, traces of his youthful imitation of hip-hop can still be heard, yet his distinctive, fragile synth sound is already present: notes swell and fade, drenched in long echoes, as if emerging from an endless, eternal corridor. His music has been featured on Spotify’s Fresh Finds, Billboard’s Spotify Viral 50, and Apple Music’s global Today’s Chill playlist. He has also collaborated multiple times with artists across genres, including Oli XL, CFCF, Toro y Moi, and Rip, producer for bladee—all of whom have previously been invited by Antigen.

2019年,Instupendo发布了自己的第一张全长专辑《Boys By Girls》,首次以歌手身份演唱,这也标志着他在音乐创作上的方向转变。这张专辑既保留了过往那种略带怀旧的声音质感,同时又显得相当俏皮生动,不难让人想起拓麻歌子或者是PS游戏机这样富有年代感的物件;而在2021年发行的《Love Power A-to-Z》中,他用流行化的方式更深入地探索了自己的创作,同时也逐渐在主题上延展到个人身份认同、情感与社会议题之上。如今他和Distance Decay、以及bladee的制作人Rip共同创作的《Ripstupendo》,则又逐渐开始步入新emo/indie音乐的领域中。然而,在这些甜美而又略带怪诞的新作品中,仍然包含着一个完全不变的内核

In 2019, Instupendo released his first full-length album, Boys By Girls, marking a shift in his creative direction as he sang as a vocalist for the first time. The album retained the slightly nostalgic sonic texture of his earlier work while adopting a playful, lively tone, evoking era-specific objects such as Tamagotchi or the PlayStation. On Love Power A-to-Z (2021), he pushed his exploration further through a more pop-oriented approach, gradually expanding his themes toward personal identity, emotion, and social issues. More recently, Ripstupendo—created with Distance Decay and Rip, producer for bladee—signals a move toward new emo and indie territories. Yet beneath these sweet, slightly uncanny new works lies an unchanged core: the ability to evoke deep nostalgia, quietness, and a renewed appreciation for life. This enduring emotional resonance is the key reason Instupendo has remained widely beloved over the years, and it is the musical aim he has elevated through the cultural lens of dreamcore.
