In a post on social media, Jia explained that the mistake occurred during the finalization of the film's release poster. He said he had a folder on his computer containing various posters for The Secret Agent, some of which were authorized for localization by international distributors, while others — including the one ultimately selected — had been personally collected from the internet.
"Before the film's release date was set, a colleague asked me to confirm the poster design," Jia wrote. "I had a folder labeled The Secret Agent and chose an image from it. I mistakenly believed that all the posters in that folder were materials authorized for adaptation. I forgot that some were ones I had personally saved from online sources."
The team proceeded with the design under the assumption that copyright clearance had been secured. Upon realizing the error, Jia's company reached out to the original designer via email on Sunday night to apologize and discuss compensation or potential collaboration. The team is currently awaiting a response.
"I really like this film, and I also like this poster. The mistake was mine," Jia said. "I apologize and will ensure that my team resolves this promptly with the original designer."
